Laptop computers are now sporting a new option that is going to amaze most as a result of the visible speed improvement and many will never really understand why. Some will boast of how quick their new laptop starts while others will read the fine print to see that there is this new thing called a solid state drive which has replaced the hard drive. The latter will most likely comprise of those reading this article and wanting to know what a SSD is and how it does what it does.

We have reviewed many OCZ solid state drives in the last year and today we are looking at their latest Octane 512GB model. There is no doubt that OCZ have been at the forefront of SSD development in the last year, focusing almost exclusively on Sandforce based products. For those of you who have been around as long as me however, you may remember that OCZ were the first company to partner up with Indilinx and today they reaffirm that union by including an Indilinx Everest controller in the Octane drive.

Today we're not looking at a product for aviation or gunships, but the build quality of the RunCore Pro V SATA III looks the part. The Pro V SATA III is controlled by a SandForce SF-2281 controller and uses asynchronous flash for data storage. In an era when other companies have moved to plastic housings, RunCore has kept an aluminum drive case for robust construction and added visual appeal in systems with windows or displayed drive bays.

Seagate's Momentus XT is a 2.5" notebook drive of a half-Terabyte in capacity that stands out from the crowd because it contains 4GB of SLC NAND flash. The NAND flash is used as sort of a 'fast access repository' to store commonly used data, though at 4GB, the SSD portion of this hybrid drive accounts for only 0.8% of its total storage capacity. The two platter, 7200RPM Seagate Momentus XT posts an average read latency of 11.0ms, write 13.0ms. Seagate's 3Gb/s SATA II ST95005620AS drive retails for round $156 USD / £90 GBP and requires no special drivers or software.

It has been a while since we have looked at a Synology product, and today we are reviewing their new RS212 NAS server designed for an office environment. The RS212 is a rack mount NAS server supplied with a replaceable motherboard and support for hot swappable drives. All the I/O ports are placed on the front panel for quick, easy access. The RS212 is designed to withstand high temperature environments, up to 45c.

Well I guess the secrets out by now. Intel has this morning officially released it’s new enthusiast level Intel 520 Series SSD and it is none other than ‘SandForce Driven’. What’s that, you say!?
Our report today is a complete analysis of the Intel 520 240GB 6Gbps SSD and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that this is only a prelude to the big event. As luck may have it, Intel has sent us three (3) Series 520 SSDs to do what only we can truly do for the drives. Get ready for some amazing RAID testing!

Today we review the OCZ Synapse cache SSD drive; you may be wondering why the name cache has been included in the title of this specific drive, well this is because unlike most SSD drives of which are primarily used as your main drive and used only to install Windows. The OCZ Synapse Cache SSD drives purpose is to upgrade your current system, specifically your current hard drive...

I'm a bit surprised no one has asked why Intel sampled most media outlets with two and in some cases three identical 520 Series 240GB drives for review. As a consumer I'd rather have seen performance numbers from both 240GB (our single drive review is here) and 120GB drives since these are the capacity sizes that make the most sense for computer users today. As you can imagine, no one is going to complain about getting dual 240GB drives especially media folks who are generally power users with PCs on steroids.

Since Seagate released the Momentus XT series, it has become a popular choice with notebook users who are usually limited to a single storage drive. It aims to bridge the performance gap between mechanical hard drives and solid state drives without resulting in a massive price premium. Today we are going to look at the second-generation solid state hybrid hard drive from Seagate, the Momentus XT 750 GB.
