Since Seagate released the Momentus XT series, it has become a popular choice with notebook users who are usually limited to a single storage drive. It aims to bridge the performance gap between mechanical hard drives and solid state drives without resulting in a massive price premium. Today we are going to look at the second-generation solid state hybrid hard drive from Seagate, the Momentus XT 750 GB.

We first saw the Patriot Wildfire back in June of 2011 and at the time it was one of the hottest new SSDs on the market. That was around 9 months ago so while no longer new, Wildfire is still competitive with, and considered one of the best on the market today. The key to Wildfire's longevity is the Toshiba Toggle Mode flash Patriot chose to use on this SSD.
Toshiba and their partner SanDisk has received a lot of press lately for their new 24nm Toggle Mode flash. The new 24nm flash has proven to be very fast, but that is about the only thing it's proved so far. We're still seeing issues in our labs with write performance degrading rapidly until TRIM finishes its cycle. This was not a problem on the older 32nm Toggle Mode flash, the same used on the Patriot Wildfire.
Samsung’s experience with SSDs didn’t start with the 830 Series SSD. Samsung can rightfully claim to be one of the originators of solid state storage as it is currently known and the 830 is the culmination of that knowledge and experience. Based around a lineup of 27nm Toggle NAND, 256MBs of low power DRAM, and a tri-core ARM controller, the 830 is very much a product of Samsung’s many disciplines.
We were picked up from the Hsin Chu high speed rail station by our friendly marketing contact at Kingston who drove us directly to Kingston's ten SMT-line ready Taiwan factory, which is about 15 minutes from our entry point back to Taipei. We were told that this factory only (we laughed when Kingston said its Taiwan facility is a small operation) has 600 employees.
With the introduction set, it brings us to the reason for this article and that is our factory tour. We were exclusively invited into the Kingston factory where few media have been and got shown the process of making an SSD from start to finish. Due to media restrictions, we were not allowed to produce a video of the tour, but we were allowed to take photos. Obviously Kingston is a market leader in memory and SSD products and there is plenty of sensitive machinery and such - and we needed to respect that and their rules.

Dass sich die Speicherkapazität von SSDs auf deren Performance, insbesondere auf die Schreibleistung, auswirkt, dürfte weithin bekannt sein. Doch wenn man die Eckdaten der Sandforce-basierenden Modelle betrachtet, scheinen diese hiervon gar nicht betroffen zu sein. Zudem werden drei unterschiedliche Typen von Flash-Speicher verbaut (ONFi 2.x Synchron, ONFi 1.0 Asynchron und Toggle-Mode), die offenbar zu sehr ähnlichen Leistungswerten, aber zu unterschiedlichen Preisen führen.
