SanDisk has finally jumped full tilt back into the world of SSDs and our report today will introduce you to the use of yet another brand of NAND flash memory that we haven’t seen in any SATA 3 SSDs, at least that I am aware of. The benefit, of course, is that this memory is owned by SanDisk. This allows them a great deal of flexibility with respect to client SSD pricing, so much so in fact, that they can actually force competitors to reduce SSD prices in order to remain competitive.

As SSD manufacturers continually pump out new drives that push the performance ceilings in an attempt to gain the top performer crown, Kingston has quietly introduced their SandForce powered SSDNow V+200 line that they refer to as the "everyday business SSD". With solid performance and an economical price point, should this be your choice for your single or fleet of PC’s? Have a read to find out.

Our SSD review today will be on the Toshiba MK4001GRZB 400GB SAS 6Gb/s Enterprise SLC SSD and will be the first to experience our new Enterprise Test Protocol. This SSD brings with it some of the best sustainable performance in the realm, and also has recently taken the Grand Prize for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Conservation from the Japan Energy Conservation Center, so it is definitely a top candidate to initiate our new Enterprise Test Protocol.

On February 28th we published our first review of the SanDisk Extreme 240GB, the first 24nm flash drive on the market with a SandForce flash processor unit. In the review we focused mainly on the low price point of the drive since the performance was still very close to the large number of Team SandForce drives using 25nm IMFT flash. What we didn't know at the time was our test systems were compromised in some way. I would love to give an explanation, but I honestly don't have one. It wasn't just the primary test system, but both identical systems and even a fresh build system based on another chipset, the older P67 test rig.
To make matters worse, even a brand new build based on another company's Z68 board did the same thing. After spending 18 to 20 hours a day working on the issue Chad Sebring chimed in with an idea, look at the drivers. All of the systems were using the same chipset drivers, but we were trying different RST drivers. After downloading a different set of drivers from a different web page we had TRIM again. It's safe to say that for the next couple of weeks I will hate computers. I HATE YOU COMPUTERS!!!

In taking a close look at the need for mSATA SSDs in today’s SSD arena, it just doesn’t really seem clear as to why manufacturers are jumping into the mSATA fold so quickly. We might be able to say that the push to market of mSATA SSDs has become a trend, in fact. Our analysis today will be the MyDigitalSSD Super Cache 32GB mSATA SSD, an SSD that is capable of fulfilling the disk caching role just as easily as if it were in use as a boot drive in systems capable of mSATA support.

Today we will be taking a look at the single bay DS112j, which is the latest model in Synology's NAS range for home use, offering file storage, sharing and data protection. We will also take a look at Synology's latest operating system, the very recently released DiskStation Manager 4.0.

With storage at a premium and the need to centralise data, what solution has QNAP got to offer to solve this ever growing need?

Instead of placing your old 2.5” hard drive into a slow USB 2.0 enclosure, why not try something faster. OWC offers the Mercury On-The-Go FireWire 800 / USB 2.0 Portable Kit which allows the user to take advantage of Firewire 800 speeds. Plus the clear acrylic enclosure lets you see exactly which drive is housed within the enclosure.

For those users that want their cake and eat it too, how do we leverage the speed of SSD drives with the raw storage capacity of traditional spinning drives? The answer, SSD caching. Originally only available on higher end enterprise class storage, such as Adaptec’s maxCache or LSI’s CacheCade, this technology is beginning to show up in the consumer market. Essentially this allows a user to configure one (or more) SSD drives to be used for read or write cache for frequently accessed data residing on slower spinning HDD media. This frequently accessed data sitting on spinning HDD media will be served by the faster SSD drives, and the end result is SSD “like” performance with the raw capacity of traditional HDD media.
