2011 was the year that saw SandForce based Solid State Drives take off once and for all, but they seem to keep improving more and more leading into this year 2012. We recently took a look at the Samsung 830 Series 128GB SSD which proves to be one of the best models on the SandForce market, we are hoping to see a similar performance from this new M3 range from Plextor we have here today...

How much is too much? For those who tend to answer "...it's never enough!" there is the QNAP TS-879U-RP Turbo NAS. With eight 3.5" drive bays available, there is a potential for 24TB of storage and transfer rates of more than 10 Gb/s. That's ten times more data than any home PC can pump through its ubiquitous GbE network interface, and twenty times faster than what the latest generation of SSDs can muster. This is for people who have serious data appetites and deep pockets. The cost to fill this unit up with HDDs, in the early days of 2012, is enough to give some people pause; for most business owners, it's a small and necessary cost.

Nearly one year since acquiring well-know flash controller manufacturer Indilinx, OCZ has debuted their first storage productbased on the Indilinx infused Everest platform with NDurance technology: welcome OCZ's Octane SSD. Offered in 1-terabyte capacities, the OCT1-25SAT3 series is designed to deliver optimized performance for mainstream users wanting to capitalize on near-instant solid state response times. OCZ Octane SSDs are good for up to 480MB/s read speeds over the latest SATA 6GB/s interface, and yield up to 35,000 Random Read IOPS. In this article Benchmark Reviews tests these specifications, and compares the OCZ Octane solid state drive to the leading competition.

Despite the importance of keeping our personal data safe, many forego setting themselves up with a solid solution that can come to the rescue in the event of a disaster. NAS boxes can be a bit pricy, however, and not to mention restrictive. That problem is solved with FreeNAS, a perfect start to your DIY storage solution.

We have already seen one hybrid solid state drive solution in the Synapse Cache drive from OCZ. You pair it with your normal hard drive and it acts as a cache drive doing most of the work to speed things up. If you are familiar with OCZ’s RevoDrive series of drives you know they offer some of the fastest transfer speeds available on the consumer level when it comes to solid state drives. OCZ has decided to take this incredible speed put it together with their caching technology and brings us the RevoDrive Hybrid. It is a PCI-Express card that has a normal 1TB drive on it for storage and 128GB of solid state flash to do the caching. The drive has rated speeds of up to 910MB/s read and 810MB/s write. Read on as we take a look…

The DiskStation DS412+ is another high performance NAS from Synology which allows a total of 4 HDDs/SSDs to be installed for enough storage space and are cooled properly with the two included 92mm fans, which are also silent during normal operation. On a single LAN connection, the unit maxes out the read/write transfer speeds and the “beast” is really unleashed when used in enterprise environments, with the “Link Aggregation” feature enabled.

RAID, the final frontier. These are the voyages of...ah, who am I kidding? Choosing to implement RAID today isn’t embarking on a mission to boldly go where no one has gone before. This technology has literally been around for years, and today RAID support can be found within most operating systems, integrated on motherboards, or easily added to any system as a 3rd party controller for almost nothing (quick search on Amazon yields controllers for less than $30). With its wide availability, you may find yourself at some point contemplating taking the plunge and configuring a RAID setup on your own system. However, before doing so, there are some things you should consider.

Thecus claim to be the storageleader in the NAS market, but can their N4200 Pro live up tothis reputation?

The Solid State market has been thriving in the last six months. Part of this growth has been caused by the Thailand floods which raised the prices of mechanical drives. If you are in the market for a new Solid State drive, but only have £100 to spend then the product we are reviewing today will be of interest.
