With the popularity of mSATA SSDs being all the rage as of late, it was only a matter of time before a new PCIe adapter was introduced that might allow users to take advantage of that extra storage should they find an mSATA SSD at a great price. Our review today will look at the new OWC Mercury AccelsiorM mSATA controller and some might be surprised to learn that this device is the industry’s first fully bootable Mac and PC plug and play mSATA controller release.
It seems that OWC has been at it once again and we recently received a new OWC Accelsior E2 PCIe SSD, fitted with two 240GB blade SSDs for excellent performance and capacity once again. The Accelsior is the latest design of the OWC engineering team and contains two 6Gbps eSATA ports that provide for external storage up to 32TB as well as performance similar to the original Accelsior. Once again, OWC has caught us off guard and this seems to be a first and great idea for increasing performance to another level and increasing capacity significantly. The beauty of the Accelsior has always been its expansion capabilities but this knocks the original capacity maximum out of the ball park.
PCI-Express solid state drives are fairly new and there are only a handful of these drives available. These devices break the speed barrier on SATA 6GB/s drives by using the PCI-E interface. The most prevalent PCI-E solid state drives our OCZ’s RevoDrive series, but OCZ better watch out because the drive we are taking a look at today has a few features that the RevoDrive’s do not. An SSD arrived earlier today that I thought all might like to read about. A quick change of plans to the negative of a few and here we are taking pictures and benchmarking the new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G 120GB SSD. Having just completed testing, OWC gets a big thumbs up for being only the second manufacturer to release an SSD with SandForces new SF-2000 series SATA 3 processor as well as ensuring the '6G' is of the quality that we have come to appreciate.
External storage solutions are all the rage as of late and they are reaching performance and capacity heights that we have never seen before. Yesterday, we spoke of technology advancing to the point that we could carry our entire computing environment with us and boot it from any PC and today, we can do that with both Windows and Mac systems. To be useful though, external storage needs to have a few characteristics that we still hasn’t become the norm. USB 3.0 is a must as trying to work on a USB 2.0 system might be cognizant of trying to wade through a thick pool of mud and having an SSD present in the device is key to the performance USB 3.0 speaks to, albeit Thunderbolt would be ideal but has yet to really become mainstream. As much as many not consider it, looks also play a large part and that leads us right into our analysis of the OWC Envoy Pro 240GB external storage SSD that we are examining today.
We are starting to get overloaded with these new mainstream drives that use SandForce SF-2281 controllers paired with asynchronous flash. These products are just coming in from every angle and I'm starting to get the feeling they'll outnumber the faster synchronous drives in terms of total SKUs offered in total by the Team SandForce manufacturers. This is good news for the mainstream market looking for good, actually, above average SSD performance, but not so good for those looking for the ultimate performance found with synchronous flash SandForce drives.
The OWC DIY Kit is compatible with the latest Mid-2012 non-Retina Macbook Pros and helps us install an additional disk drive by replacing the Apple SuperDrive. A new DVDRW from Sony Optiarc that comes with 24X DVDRW and SATA connection interface. The reading part is superb with good results at all error correction tests. When used a compatible disc for the 24X burning speed, the results were very good, either in burning quality and burning time. Overall a great burner to work with and a product that gets our Best Buy Award.
