Since they entered the NAS marketplace a few years back Synology have been continually evolving their products. The majority of their products get a yearly refresh for enhanced performance and features and between hardware launches their DiskStation Manager OS has continued to receive significant new revisions. Today we take a look at the latest revision of each, the DS414j (their first j model with dual core CPU + FPU and USB 3.0) with DSM 5.0.

The 1TB Seagate FreeAgent Go performs respectably, with transfer rates you might expect from your typical USB hard drive. The slight differences in benchmark performance might not really matter though, because during the real world file transfer testing there was never more than a one or two second difference between drives.

Hitachi is making a big push with their G-Technology brand of portable storage drives. Just a few weeks ago I was at a San Jose Sharks hockey game and during one of the breaks a commercial aired on the display above the rink. The G-DRIVE Mobile was the focus of the commercial. I thought it was kind of cool to see a storage product featured so prominently to mainstream users.

It was just a few weeks ago, that I took a look at Samsung’s flagship consumer grade SSD, the 840 Pro. In this article I’m taking a look at the first SSD in the world to use TLC NAND, the standard 840 series SSD. TLC NAND is able to store 3 bits of data per cell. This differs from MLC NAND in that MLC NAND can only store 2 bits of data per cell. The obvious attraction for using TLC NAND is down to cost.

They say size doesn’t matter, but I think it does… at least when it comes to a USB drives, and I’ll leave it at that… I’ve got an exclusive review for you, our friends over at Kingston have sent me a rather expensive USB drive, coming in at about $1100 it’s not one that most people will be running out and grabbing anytime soon I’m sure, but it’s one of the first on the market. So I’ve got my hands on the Kingston DataTraveler 310 256gb USB Flash Drive, and you know we love our flash drive here at TestFreaks, and one like this gets us a little more than excited! Anyway, I’ve run my tests on it and compared it to some other drives I’ve got on hand and I can tell you that it performs better than even Kingston claims in does, I got faster speeds for both reads and writes, so read on to learn more…

Ultimately, Asus' portable Blu-Ray drive has a lot going for it. USB bus power makes it convenient to pick up and take anywhere, the ultra-slim design and blue LEDs look fantastic, and the drive reads and writes everything from a simple CD-R's to recordable BD media reliably.

Less than one year ago SandForce gained control of the consumer solid state drive market with their SandForce SF-1200 SSD Processor. This technology replaced the previous generation of Barefoot SSDs designed around South Korean-based Indilinx, Inc. While popular themselves, Indilinx Barefoot MLC SSDs lacked proper NAND management and performance dramatically degraded over time. SandForce DuraClass technology paired to TRIM support in Windows 7 has helped with this concern, but it was their RAISE technology that provides RAID-like protection for single SSD computer systems paired to AES-128 automatic data encryption that put them on top. Now preparing to ship their second generation of SSD processors, Benchmark Reviews takes a look at the differences.

Is the upgrade to USB 3.0 worth it? We show you why you need to get up to date with USB 3.0 and the Vantec NexStar CX SuperSpeed drive enclosure. This external drive enclosure is metal, sturdy, and fast! Don't be slow, upgrade to USB 3.0!

Just over two years ago there were only five companies involved in Solid State Drive technology, and as of January 2010 there are nearly 140 names in the business. In this article Benchmark Reviews inspects the Toshiba T6UG1XBG Solid State Drive controller, which is used in the third-generation Kingston SSDNow V+ SNV325. The Toshiba T6UG1XBG SSD controller is a 43nm part, with a maximum rated read speed of 230MBps and write-to performance peaking at 180MBps.

Lower power consumption and heat output are the least impressive benefits of Solid State Drives. The real payoff is in the practically instant response time and high-performance throughput. Once SSDs could outperform their HDD counterpart, it was all about price and capacity. Adding up to 64MB of Elpida DRAM to the buffer has permanently solved stuttering problems, making raw performance the last bottleneck. An Indilinx 'Barefoot' internal controller commands the bank of Samsung K9HCG08U1M DRAM modules, allowing a single OCZ Vertex SSD to offer impressive capacity with unmatched performance. But what if we put two Vertex SSDs into a striped RAID-0 array? Benchmark Reviews tests the speed and bandwidth of two OCZSSD2-1VTX120G SSDs against! the fastest storage products on the planet in this OCZ Vertex SSD RAID-0 performance article.
