It's now 2012 and the netbook market has evolved into ultrabooks. Ultrabooks use full speed notebook components, but keep the ultra-thin design first found on netbooks. In order for ultrabooks to take shape, 9mm HDDs had to go, enter mSATA.
mSATA and the close variants are slated to make a grand entrance this year and not just in ultrabooks. At CES, four out of five next generation GIGABYTE desktop motherboards on display using the Ivy Bridge chipset sported mSATA slots. Intel's Smart Response Technology and NVELO's Dataplex software layer, also commonly referred to as SSD Cache can both quickly turn a small mSATA drive into instant IOPS performance beast while still offering the capacity of your large data capacity HDD.

RunCore has beefed up their Pro V line with the SF-2281 SandForce controller and a SATA III interface to attempt to join the ranks of the elite drives. Employing the prized "Golden" firmware from SandForce, it promises to offer better IOPS performance and better sustained reads and writes. Will it be enough to standout from the SandForce crowd? Have a look at the article to see!

Other World Computing or OWC as most people call them is a company you may or may not have heard of. They have been around since 1988 and are one of the premier brands of upgrade and enhancement products for Apple devices. They started out with memory and like most memory companies they have started producing solid state drives. Today we are going to be checking out their Mercury Extreme Pro 6G Solid State drive. By the name you can guess this is a solid state drive and it boasts speeds of 559MB/s read and 527MB/s write. Let’s see how it stands up to the other big names in the SSD market.

The Marvell based drives from 2011 were very good products, they just had a very big umbrella over their head. Pricing always plays a large role in the retail purchasing decision, especially in a slow moving economy. The Marvell controlled products are at a disadvantage when it comes to price out of the gate. The architecture calls for a DRAM cache buffer, an added expense, when compared to the SandForce design that runs an internal buffer in the controller. When you add the additional cost with the lower performance compared to many of the SF-2281 controlled drives, there just wasn't enough incentive for consumers to come home with a solid state drive using a Marvell controller.
The 2012 SSD season is now in full swing and unlike last year, SandForce doesn't have a new controller ready to follow their successes of the last two years. Furthermore, the Team SandForce partners are tip toeing into 2012, we've yet to see an established Team SandForce member show a drive with the latest generation flash coming from Samsung and Toshiba. SandForce is leaving a door open and in this competitive market others are rushing to get their foot in the door.

Solid Sate Drives are now becoming cheaper and more accessible to the general consumer and with the boost in sales companies are now able to upgrade the technology making SSD devices faster than ever. The SATA based SSD has been around for quite a few years now and as the technology advances and moves on we are now seeing more PCI-Express SSD cards being developed. One such card that is taking the making by storm is the OCZ RevoDrive3 PCI-E SSD, which is what we have to be reviewed for you today...

I think by now most of our regular readers know about IMFT, Intel and Micron's joint flash venture. Toshiba and SanDisk have teamed up as well. Flash Forward, LTD celebrated the opening of Fab 5, a 300mm flash memory fabrication facility in Japan, back in July. Flash Forward is owned by Toshiba (50.1%) and SanDisk (49.9%). This puts SanDisk in a good position when it comes to manufacturing SSDs.
SanDisk 24nm Toggle Mode flash is the successor to the Toshiba 32nm Toggle Mode flash that was first introduced on many enthusiast class SandForce SATA III SSDs in 2011. Don't think Flash Forward is stopping at 24nm, they are already working on 19nm with parts sampling as I type this.

Since Seagate released the Momentus XT series, it has become a popular choice with notebook users who are usually limited to a single storage drive. It aims to bridge the performance gap between mechanical hard drives and solid state drives without resulting in a massive price premium. Today we are going to look at the second-generation solid state hybrid hard drive from Seagate, the Momentus XT 750 GB.
