The Crucial M500 struggled to be competitive performance wise after only a few months of being on the market. As the popularity of NAS devices (or NAS servers as we like to call them) keeps increasing every day naturally many of you expect from us to focus in getting some of the latest models to hit the market from all the major players for testing purposes. Well lately we've seen the introduction of not only expensive models designed and manufactured by both old and new companies with business customers as their main target audience but also low and mid-end ones developed mostly for house and office use. That being said with the current state of HDD prices it really doesn't come as a surprise to see that consumers are not as interested in single bay models as they are in dual and quad ones and who can blame them since having at least one more available bay for future expansion is the obvious choice. So for the past two weeks we've been putting the latest quad bay NAS server to hit the market by QNAP the TurboNAS TS-420 through rigorous testing to see if it has what it takes to win the hearts of home and office users.

Since their first SSD Intel have taken a few approaches to building the devices. Initially they went with their own controllers within the drives and it is fair to say that those drives were some of the best in early generations. Since then we have seen them dabble with updated controllers under their own brand, try out Marvell and more recently release a Sandforce based drive in the form of the 520 series.

If you've ever visited Benchmark Reviews in the past, you've probably noticed that we've tested a large collection of NAS products. At the same time, you might have noticed how many of these products aren't really geared towards home users needing just the basics. That's where the QNAP TS-119 comes in handy. Designed to hold a single SATA drive (HDD or SSD), the TS-119 can deliver all the great features of larger more expensive NAS products. The latest Enterprise-level NAS servers feature iSCSI expansion, RAID redundancy, and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, and surprisingly the TS-119 does these things too, but without the expensive price tag. How can a single-drive NAS offer RAID you ask? In this article Benchmark Reviews takes the QNAP TS-119 through a tough set of p! erformance tests while we outline the Turbo NAS functions and features.

Today’s review of the Crucial M4 256GB SSD comes as a ‘readers choice’ SSD review as it has made its way to our office only through the amount of e-mails received asking for its performance beside that of its big brothers and other SSDs of similar size. The common theme with new ‘Gen 2′ SSDs is that higher capacity equates to better performance. Our M4 128GB SSD tests seem to contradict this and we believe that Crucial just may have found the ‘sweet spot’ for this SSD.

In terms of performance, it's a mixed bag. Most operations like boot, frequently used file/application loads, etc are dramatically enhanced with times rivaling some of the top SSDs. However, the Dataplex software must first prioritize this data which can take a few iterations before it really hits its stride. Basically this means performance can feel uneven depending on your computing habits. Anyone not using Windows 7 is out of luck because currently that is the only OS the software supports...
