Our release yesterday of our Intel 520 SSD Review (Round One) was probably one of the most anticipated events seen yet in the SSD arena and, if sales can be determined by the extreme numbers of readers who visited the site, Intel will do very well. I think by now most of our regular readers know about IMFT, Intel and Micron's joint flash venture. Toshiba and SanDisk have teamed up as well. Flash Forward, LTD celebrated the opening of Fab 5, a 300mm flash memory fabrication facility in Japan, back in July. Flash Forward is owned by Toshiba (50.1%) and SanDisk (49.9%). This puts SanDisk in a good position when it comes to manufacturing SSDs.
SanDisk 24nm Toggle Mode flash is the successor to the Toshiba 32nm Toggle Mode flash that was first introduced on many enthusiast class SandForce SATA III SSDs in 2011. Don't think Flash Forward is stopping at 24nm, they are already working on 19nm with parts sampling as I type this.

When i first started using a personal computer i remember that i chose a configuration with an 300MB hard disk drive which was not only the highest capacity drive available at the time but it also cost as much as half of the entire system. Almost 22 years later technology has advanced to a level where a person can actually purchase one of the latest entry level 4TB hard disk drives (4000000MB) for less than USD350/300Euros, currently that is since prices tend to fall. Hitachi GST has already released 3 different 4TB HDD models in the market, two in their Deskstar consumer oriented line and one in their Ultrastar enterprise line. Today with us we have the high end consumer model, the Deskstar 7K4000 (HDS724040ALE640) and as usual it will go through rigorous testing to see just how well it performs compared to other hard disk drives in the market.

Le Vertex est sûrement le SSD le plus connu au monde car il est à l'origine d'une véritable SAGA. 1, 2, 3, et maintenant 4, OCZ ne cesse de d'améliorer son SSD phare. D'abord en contrôleur Indilinx, puis en SandForce, OCZ revient maintenant à ses premiers amours et réadopte donc une solution Indilinx avec l'Everest 2. An evolution, but not a revolution - that is how we'd like to describe Hitachi's new 4 TB hard drives. The performance is excellent. With its high data density the 7K4000 is the fastest 7,200 RPM drive that we've ever tested, while the 5,400 RPM 5K4000 almost achieves 7,200 RPM-like performance. The good performance and huge storage capacity luckily do not come at a high price. They don't cost more than typical 2+ TB drives if you look at the price per GB.
The noise production is acceptable, even though it could have been lower. The idle power usage could have been lower as well, especially considering the high probability that disks like these will end up in a Home Server or NAS.
