With the advent of affordable solid state drives and the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface, we have seen a drastic increase in the size and speed of flash drives. Patriot is one of the companies leading the way on both speed and size with its Supersonic Magnum line, which we will be looking at today. The Supersonic Magnum flash drive is 256GB flash drive with a read speed of 250MB/s and a write speed of 160MB/s. In this review Benchmark Reviews will be verifying the speed of the Patriot Magnum Supersonic and compare it to two SATA-II SSD's.

Just recently we took a look at Patriot's Wildfire SSD that uses a SandForce SF-2281 controller and Toshiba Toggle flash to deliver amazing performance. Today we are looking at the Wildfire of the portable flash drive world, the Supersonic Magnum USB 3.0. This new and improved Magnum offers big capacity sizes just like last year's model, so you can carry entire movie and music collections with you, but the new 8-channel controller paired with USB 3.0 allows you to transfer those files at very high speeds.

Appearance versus reality' is one of my favorite things to write about when I studied English Language Arts IB back in high school. Unlike most topics people like to study in literature, this actually applies to our daily lives just as much as what we are about to have for lunch this afternoon. Whether it be the Hyundai girl I have talked about in my ASUS P8H67-I Deluxe review, or the "change is certain, progress is not" attitude discussed in my Intel Core i3-2120 article last month, it is surprising how much we can all relate to it. Just last night, after eating out with a friend here in Toronto, he drove me home because I don't have my car with me at the time. As we walked out into the parking lot, I was excited to see him point at the shiny new Graphite Luster Metallic Acura TSX in front. "Nice car", I thought to myself. Unfortunately, what he actually meant was the dull little Hyundai Elantra parked behind it. It is unfortunate to say sometimes in life, things are just not as good as we perceive them to be. On the other hand, the ambitiously named OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS 240GB I have reviewed last week seems to be quite the opposite. Carrying a name that expresses no attempt at being modest, we later found out this is only a part of the story -- its performance is simply matchless and beyond imagination. That's nice to hear. But how about yet another ambitiously named product, the Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB? With a capacity in the area of 'ridiculous', and promises to deliver up to 200MB/s read and 120MB/s write over USB 3.0 in conjunction with its 8-channel technology, is this what Jeremy Clarkson would refer to as the fastest USB flash drive... in the world? We have it thoroughly tested in our eight-page review today.

Have you ever had the feeling that no matter how much available space you carry around with you it's just never enough when the time comes to actually put it to good use? Well to be entirely honest i have felt that quite a few times in my life but what's really even more annoying is to have plenty of available storage space with you only to find out that there's not enough speed to make use of it all in the time window that you have. The introduction of USB 3.0 a few years back was a step towards the right direction since in theory it's up to 10 times faster than the older USB 2.0 but to date with the exception of portable SSDs there aren't really many storage related media that come even close to its possible data transfer speeds and that includes the majority of USB 3.0 compatible flash drives in the market. Well Patriot Memory wants to change or at least improve on that and so their latest SuperSonic Magnum USB 3.0 Flash Drive line doesn't only offer capacities up to 256GB but it's also pretty much as fast as it gets (at least currently).

When it comes to performance the Patriot Supersonic Magnum 256GB is hands down the fastest USB 3.0 Flash drive that we have ever seen when it comes to the synthetic benchmark results. Seeing sequential read speeds of nearly 300MB/s and 180MB/s write is very impressive...

The Patriot Memory Supersonic Magnum USB drive promises blazing fast 250MB/s read and 160MB/s write speeds. The Supersonic Magnum drive is available in 256GB, 128GB, and 64GB capacities, utilizing 8-channel technology to efficiently deliver impressive transfer rates whether the system is running on Windows, Mac OS or Linux operating systems. Measuring just 9.1mm thick, the Patriot Memory Supersonic Magnum USB drive actually has no clearance issues when plugged in side-by-side in parallel with a USB cable at the back of the motherboard. It is however 26.9mm wide so there might be clearance issues with the rear device port directly above or below the Supersonic Magnum drive. A durable aluminum shell casing protects the Supersonic Magnum from drops, shocks and other impacts of up to 15G and it is backed with a warranty that spans 5-years.

In this day and age, storage is everything, especially when you're on the go, and there's generally speaking, two ways of having it in your life when mobile. The first is utilising the cloud and the second is via USB storage. Patriot's newest USB flash drive is aimed at users needing both large capacities and high performance and is branded under the Supersonic Magnum branding, though not for the faint hearted, as the range starts from around £70.

As the demand for storage space increases we have seen a handful of manufacturers releasing larger and faster USB 3.0 pen drives. In January we reviewed the Kingston DataTraveler HyperX Predator 512GB drive which broke new ground for performance. The only downside was the asking price, a staggering £650 inc vat. Today we are looking at the latest SuperSonic Magnum 256GB USB 3.0 pen drive, priced at a more palatable £250 inc vat.
Storage
Compact discs, when compared to USB flash drives, are really not as compact as once thought, nor are 4GBs considered a ‘huge’ size anymore. With high resolution pictures taking up 20MB per shot and high definition videos eating up gigabytes worth of space every minute, photographers having to lug notebooks or external storage devices are most likely breathing a collective sigh of relief with the release of Patriot’s Supersonic Magnum 256GB USB 3.0 thumb drive.
Storage
USB 3.0 has become the standard transfer interface for most consumers, so now that it is mainstream, more and more devices are hitting retail shelves with transfer speeds that can utilize the throughput of the interface.
