The Marvell based drives from 2011 were very good products, they just had a very big umbrella over their head. Pricing always plays a large role in the retail purchasing decision, especially in a slow moving economy. The Marvell controlled products are at a disadvantage when it comes to price out of the gate. The architecture calls for a DRAM cache buffer, an added expense, when compared to the SandForce design that runs an internal buffer in the controller. When you add the additional cost with the lower performance compared to many of the SF-2281 controlled drives, there just wasn't enough incentive for consumers to come home with a solid state drive using a Marvell controller.
The 2012 SSD season is now in full swing and unlike last year, SandForce doesn't have a new controller ready to follow their successes of the last two years. Furthermore, the Team SandForce partners are tip toeing into 2012, we've yet to see an established Team SandForce member show a drive with the latest generation flash coming from Samsung and Toshiba. SandForce is leaving a door open and in this competitive market others are rushing to get their foot in the door.

Plextor is probably best known for their optical drives so it may come as a surprise to some that they also offer SSDs in their product line. Their most recent line is the M2 series which features a Marvell controller and a 6Gbps interface. We've got our hands on the 128GB version and we'll see how it stacks up against the newest SandForce based drives.

Today we are looking at a new mSATA drive from Plextor – the 128GB M5M. Diminutive mSATA drives are without doubt a growing market, adopted in many laptop computers today. As we have seen in recent desktop motherboard reviews on Kitguru many manufacturers are now including a mSATA slot, an ideal solution for a fast boot drive.

Bringing the PC gaming experience to a console is no easy task, but Penguin United's Eagle Eye Converter succeeds in providing gamers the precision of a keyboard and mouse combo on the PS3 - and it does so without lag.

Today for review I’ve got two products and actually two reviews for you. The first review is of a PCI-Express USB3.0 Host Controller Card and a handy USB3.0 Extension Cable. Following this review will be a second review of a 2.5” USB3.0 enable hard drive enclosure. The reason I’m doing it this way is that they are separate products in their own right, and they deserve to be looked at that way. So read on for a look at the PCIE card and Extension cable, then check back later today for the second review of the enclosure…

The more solid state drives grow in popularity, the larger the need to make them affordable. As it sits now, companies are choosing between two paths to achieve low priced drives. The first has been to extend the lifecycle for current products on the market, either leaving the existing model numbers in tact or releasing a new product SKU based on existing technology. A good example of this is the Corsair Nova, a slightly revised Indilinx Barefoot controlled drive that is very close to the original Performance Series offered by Corsair last year.

Patriot faces some stiff competition with a number of SSD's already on the market with performance specifications on par or exceeding that of the Zephyr. Will the JMicron JMF612 controller-based Zephyr SSD series rise above with its combination of price vs. performance?

We have already started testing USB 3.0 products and with our upcoming thumb drive round up testing starting today, we have many more to come. The USB 3.0 products have performed very well, but their high cost and bulk will keep them from penetrating the market quickly.
