SATA compatible solid state drives (SSDs) may have been the ones to start their very own small performance revolution in the PC market almost a decade ago but as we speak thanks to several advancements in the field the tiny M.2 and full size PCI-express based models are the ones mostly preferred by professionals, serious gamers and enthusiasts. Fortunately although a few years back consumers only had a handful of such solutions to choose from by just a couple of manufacturers today most have at several such models in their product lines something which as expected has helped not only keep prices low but has also helped boost performance and durability levels. Plextor is without doubt one of the oldest players in the market and although they already have a rather successful PCIe SSD model in their lineup (M6e) they just recently released an updated version called the M6e Black Edition.

Last week we found the Plextor M6e 256GB M.2 PCI Express SSD to be pretty damn fast, but we really wanted to see what happened when we got two drives running in RAID. The Plextor M6e PCIe M.2 SSD is a PCIe Gen 2.0 x2 device is available in 128, 256 and 512GB capacities and is factory rated as having up to 770MB/s sequential read and 625 MB/s sequential write speeds. . If you happened to put two of these drives together to create a RAID0 array, you are talking about having over 1.4GB/s on the sequential read speeds. You’d need at least three leading SATA III 6Gbps drives to hit those speeds...

Our SSD report today will be a detailed analysis of the Plextor M5S 256GB SATA 3 SSD, a drive that was officially unveiled by Plextor only yesterday. This report is a bit special as Plextor contacted us several weeks back and asked if we might enjoy first crack at this SSD, promising to let them know if it was anything less than they believed it would be. We were definitely more than happy to oblige just as we are giving the world a first look at the M5S, a drive that we think may impress you.

Now Plextor have built a mSATA SSD around the latest Marvell controller and hope to offer desktop like SATA 6GB/s in the compact form factor. Today we find out how it compares to an existing mSATA SSD as well as some desktop models.

The Plextor M5M 256GB mSATA SSD is an amazing product. It has the Marvell 88SS9187 controller and Toshiba Toggle NAND flash, so it's super fast. As well, this drive has true protect data integrity and AES data encryption. Also, it's very reliable with a MTBF of 2.4 million and comes with a 5 year warranty.

Plextor shows us what it has got in an mSATA SSD with its M5M 256GB. TweakTown shows you what that's like in RAID 0. Let's go!

We have other news today as well. After launching Hardware.Info UK in June of last year, it’s now time for Hardware.Info US. The content will generally be the same, but on the product pages for the US site you will only find US shops with prices in US dollars. From now on we will send you links to both sites, so you can choose which one is the most relevant for your audience.

While we haven't had a ton of mSATA drives come across our desk, the ones that have are pretty much the best you can buy right now. The M5M did an admirable job on all of our tests with performance numbers that were tops in the charts in many instances which was frankly a bit of a surprise given the competition...

Plextor has been causing quite a stir in the SSD market over the last couple of years. They have quietly been building their standing as a serious player in the SSD market. I believe this is largely due to their reputation for building solid and reliable SSDs, based on mature SSD controllers, and their own proprietary firmware. Not only that, but Plextor SSDs also perform extremely well.
