While not the newest drive on the block, Mushkin's Chronos Deluxe 240GB offers legendary LSI SandForce performance, at a price that is hard to beat.
The Mushkin Chronos Deluxe is an SSD bred through a company that, like many others, has a framework in the memory field to rely on. Unlike many others though, Mushkin’s lineage starts at the base of The Rocky Mountains and their ‘Welcome Message‘ by Company President, D. George Stathakis, speaks of community values and ideals often lost in the realm of technology. Today’s report examines the Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB 6Gbps SSD. It has been a really long time since we have reviewed a product from Mushkin. Mushkin has mainly been known for memory products, but like most memory companies have moved into the storage realm with solid state drives. Today we are taking a look at their top tier SATA 6GB/s Chronos Deluxe Drive. The big difference between this drive and the normal Chronos is that it uses premium Toshiba toggle mode NAND memory and the Chronos uses asynchronous NAND memory. Mushkin has quietly held a price lead throughout 2012 on the 480 / 512GB capacity size. The Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 480GB isn't always the absolute lowest priced SSD in this size, but it's the lowest priced SSD with synchronous / toggle mode flash.
The Mushkin Chronos GO Deluxe 1.8″ 6Gbps SSD measures 78.5 x 54 x 5mm and weighs about 34 grams compared to the typical 2.5″ design that weighs in at 80 grams and is considerably larger. Mushkin’s website displays availability of 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 and 480GB capacities, although a quick search of the Internet is showing limited availability of the 120, 240 and 480GB capacities.
Mushkin is best known for their memory products and while they don't have an expansive line of SSDs, they offer a drive for just about every type of user. The Ventura Plus is a new brand of USB 3.0 Flash Drives from Mushkin Enhanced and comes with good transfer speeds, while maintaining and affordable price. Today we are taking a look at another solid state drive from Mushkin. This one comes from their Reactor line and is the 512GB version. In the past Mushkin primarily used SandForce controllers with their solid state drives, but this time they have gone with Silicon Motion’s SM2246EN controller. This controller from what we’ve seen is very solid and performs without issue. They have teamed this controller with Micron’s 16nm MLC NAND. This combination gives the 512GB version of the drive a sequential read speed of 560 MB/s and sequential write speed of 460 MB/s with 71K IOPS read and 75K IOPS write.
