They are finally here, a moment I've anticipated since June 2010. Back in June we shut down a booth at Computex to take a sneak peak at a prototype Marvell 88SS9174 SSD controller. At the time we didn't fully realize just how special this new controller was, since we were blinded by record setting sequential data transfer rates. Those of you that read this site often already know that the Marvell 88SS9174 is the same controller in the Crucial RealSSD C300, but we have to go a little deeper to differentiate the old from the new. The C300 uses the 88SS9174-BJP2, a first generation SATA 6G controller that is known for its high sequential and IOPS performance, but has less than average garbage collection capability. The new 88SS9174-BKK2 is the new second generation SATA 6G controller used in the Corsair Performance 3 Series.

The best part of reviewing SSDs is the ever changing atmosphere and pace at which things progress. As a reviewer, one never knows what to expect until a SSD is in our hands and that certainly is the case with the Crucial M4 SATA 3 solid state drive. We were a bit surprised to learn that Crucials new consumer version SSD has now taken the branding of M4 vice following that of the C300 line of their former release.

While Intel will always be known for their range of consumer and business oriented processor designs, their Solid State Drives proved to be extremely popular among the enthusiast audience, selling well across the range of sizes. The X25-M in particular is still a huge seller for the company, especially with the transition to 34nm.

Synology's DS211j is a great addition to an expanding home network. Not only does it provide storage and backup solutions, it also offers print and media server capabilities, website hosting, PC-free downloading, and much more at a price that is easy on the wallet.

Portability. From mobile phones to netbooks, MP3 players to tablets, manufacturers are offering consumers more and more ways to work and play on the move. When it comes to data portability the traditional mechanical hard drive has two main competitors; the flash drive and "the cloud". As flash drive capacity has increased and price decreased the ubiquitous thumb drive has become the preferred method to store and share documents and small media files. For the more technically minded online or "cloud" storage solutions like Dropbox, Mozy or SkyDrive offer access to files from anywhere with an internet connection. Of course the speed of the cloud storage is dependant on your 'net connection.

Just a quick note to pass on that the Crucial M4 SSDs, as reviewed here, have been released to the public as of this morning and can be purchased from Crucial direct by following this link! Of particular interest just might be the pricing as we are seeing great prices for the 64GB, 128GB and 256GB at $129, $299 and $499 mark which seems to be a low for the new gen SATA 3 family.

After our recent review of the 120GB Mercury Extreme Pro 6G, I think you are familiar with Other World Computing. The OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G didn't put the company on the map, but it did verify that OWC belongs in the same legend as OCZ, G.Skill, Patriot and the rest of the Team SandForce landmarks.

There have been many Solid State Drives released in the last couple of months, and today we are looking at the new 240GB Vertex 3 from OCZ which is tagged with the ‘Max IOPS’ moniker. This drive has been tuned for users who require greater transactional throughput.
