Patriot releases another SATA 3 SSD into the consumer arena this morning, this going by the name of the Patriot Pyro. The Pyro follows suit with the few other manufacturers that have recognized consumer apprehension over premium SSD prices and have wisely made use of a more value driven asynchronous (Async) NAND flash memory. These new ‘Async’ SSDs include the OCZ Agility, OWC Electra and Corsair Series 3, all of whom have been evaluated here.

To say that Sandisk is an Innovator in solid state drives would be an understatement as we can all thank them for getting the SSD ball rolling. Sandisk was the first company to release their Sandisk U5000 32GB SSD to the public in 2007 and, on August 18, 2007, I was one of the first to publish a SSD review on the net with my brand new Sandisk SSD.

It had been some time since OCZ released the RevoDrive X2, instead concentrating on various SATA based drives based on the latest Sandforce controller but last month a press release was sent out stating that the RevoDrive 3 and RevoDrive 3 X2 were ready for release. Today we have the higher specification model, the X2 attached to our test system and will be putting it through a selection of real world and synthetic tests to find out if OCZ can meet their claims of 1500MB/s speed and 230k IOPS.

QUOTE: "Back in May we previewed the Patriot Torqx 2 120GB solid state drive and found that it offered average mainstream performance that was better than the large OEM system builder solutions. In short, that was code for saying the 120GB model sucked for enthusiasts, but then again, this isn't an enthusiast SSD. The Torqx 2 did offer low access times that were a lot less than platter drives, so Twitface and web surfers still get the SSD feel, but only see small performance increases when transferring data.

Just recently we looked at the RunCore Pro V Plus, our first in house drive to use a SandForce SF-1200 paired with 25nm flash. You may remember this combination from a recent fiasco that revolved around OCZ Technology replacing their SF-1200 / 3Xnm Vertex 2 drives with the new 25nm models without changing the model number or name. The new 25nm drives are significantly slower than the old 3Xnm flash models and unsuspecting customers were up in arms over getting drives with less usable capacity that were also slower than what they expected.
