No other industry moves as fast as the technology sector. While a few years ago we had to make do with sluggish flash drives, in 2011 there are a myriad of lightning quick USB 3.0 options available. A few weeks ago we tested at a very fast model from ADATA – the Nobility N005 Pro 64GB. Today we are looking at the latest model from Kingston, the DataTraveler HyperX 64 GB which is said to deliver class leading read and write speeds.

Alors ?

The mobile storage market is quite competitive even with raising disk prices from the Thailand flooding. Because of this, Hitachi has taken steps to differentiate themselves from most competitors. We've seen several stylish USB 3.0 drives on the market, but we've yet to see one that includes cloud based storage. Hitachi's included 3GB storage can be increased to 250GB by opting into the paid service. Both the free and paid services can be accessed from any IP based device, like your desktop, notebook, tablet or smart phone. This service obviously goes well beyond just mobile storage and moves into the realm of everywhere storage.

We are still a few days away from CES 2012, but the eleventh annual Storage Visions Conference is well underway. We were able to take a look at some unreleased products from Intel, Crucial, OCZ and ioSafe that are worth a look if you are interested in storage. The next generation of SSDs promise more performance with additional focus on reliability. Read on to see what the highlights of the show were for us.

A short time ago we reviewed the Silicon Power Velox V20 120GB SSD which just so happened to be one of the few SATA 2 drives that we had seen in 2011; the world has gone SATA 3. To say the least, it was rather unique as it was the first to contain Hynix NAND flash memory that we had reviewed. Silicon Power has since sent us their next level in performance, the Velox V30 SATA 3 ‘SandForce driven’ 240GB SSD, requesting our evaluation and review. How could we resist?

It's no secret that larger capacity SSDs are faster than the smaller capacity drives. The way data travels can be similar to a highway system, the more lanes a highway has the more cars you can push through at the same time. If SSDs only read and wrote on a one lane highway then we would be limited to less than 200MB/s on the highest rated flash available today. By opening up several lanes drives are able to reach very high speeds and do so without the limits of moving parts.

On release, the SF-2281 controlled client drives leaped to the top of performance charts, but for some, reliability and odd BSOD issues plagued these products. In our testing only two drives experienced issues. The first drive made it through standard testing, but ran into problems when deployed in a daily use system. The second drive failed to complete our standard benchmark procedures, having BSOD issues out of the box. Both drives were later fixed with a firmware update, but for a company like Intel, issues like these are unacceptable.
