We are really beginning to repeat ourselves in our SSD reviews lately. Time and again it's been clear in recent months that LSI needs to come up with a new generation SandForce controller. The SF-2281 was state-of-the-art when it came out, but now it's no longer capable of more than middle-of-the-road performance compared to other new SSDs. That's of course not a big deal if the SSD is priced accordingly, like Kingston did with its V300 series. And that's exactly the issue with Intel's 530 SSD. Intel will have to drop the price in order to make its new SSD series interesting in a competitive market.

Auch OCZ bringt mit der Vertex 2 Extended neue Versionen der SandForce SSDs mit erweiterter Kapazität und 50k IOPS. Wir haben das 120 GB Modell durchgetestet.

OCZ's RevoDrive 350 is a PCIe based SSD which features a Virtualized Controller Architecture mixed with multiple LSI/Sandforce controllers and Toshiba NAND with advertised speeds of up to 1800MB/s.

We can basically write the same conclusion for the Plextor M5 Pro 256GB as we did for the 128GB model. It's the fastest SSD in its category, and set new records in AS SSD and PCMark Vantage, and came up 15 points short of the high score in PCMark 7. Very impressive figures indeed. The incredible performance, the good warranty conditions and outstanding track record of both Marvell and Plextor make this an excellent product.

When solid state drives finally made it to the consumer market roughly 5 years ago no one could deny that they offered superior data transfer speeds compared to regular mechanical drives without at the same time producing noise and heat. However no one also could deny that such solutions had but two large drawbacks and that were their prices (for most people) and limited storage space. So the solution was quite simple for some and so back then Seagate immediately started working on a hybrid drive by marrying a standard 2.5" mechanical drive with a rather large storage capacity and a rather small 2.5" SSD. The idea was to use the HDD section to store everything you threw at the drive and the SSD section to cache the things you used mostly on your daily activities and thus provide you with increased speeds. The result was the Momentus (and later on the updated Momentus XT) hybrid drive which actually did quite well in the end and did produce better results than regular mechanical drives. Other manufacturers also decided to marry a regular HDD with an SSD but they followed a whole different path and so some did so with dual 2.5" internal enclosures (for example RAIDON), others by introducing cache SSDs and Hybrid PCIex models (OCZ) and a few by following the old RAID 0 solution which basically divides all your data evenly on two or more disks for increased performance. RaidSonic just recently jumped on that last wagon with their ICY BOX IB-RD2121StS 2x2.5" to 3.5" HDD/SSD RAID Converter and naturally we just had to check it out.

Just recently we looked at the RunCore Pro V Plus, our first in house drive to use a SandForce SF-1200 paired with 25nm flash. You may remember this combination from a recent fiasco that revolved around OCZ Technology replacing their SF-1200 / 3Xnm Vertex 2 drives with the new 25nm models without changing the model number or name. The new 25nm drives are significantly slower than the old 3Xnm flash models and unsuspecting customers were up in arms over getting drives with less usable capacity that were also slower than what they expected.

The only real downside against buying an SSD is the relative small size and high cost …. for many people they still remain an elusive pipe dream. Sure they are dropping in price all the time, but compared to a mechanical drive they are still much more expensive. All is not lost however as leading manufacturers are already aware of this and have been offering lower performance, low cost units for quite some time and today Intel put on their ‘SSD for the masses’ t-shirt with the release of the 40gb X25-V SSD. This is a first for Intel and we are particularly interested as all the drives in their range are class leading units.

Plextor is probably best known for their optical drives so it may come as a surprise to some that they also offer SSDs in their product line. Their most recent line is the M2 series which features a Marvell controller and a 6Gbps interface. We've got our hands on the 128GB version and we'll see how it stacks up against the newest SandForce based drives.
