The Samsung SM951 is one of the fastest SSD solutions out for those with a need for speed. It offers speeds that put most SSDs to shame and does it in a small M.2 2280 form factor. Last week we took a look at the 512GB variant that utilizes the AHCI host controller interface. To say the least, performance was very impressive. Samsung leverages the full power of its tremendous manufacturing capability with an SSD constructed entirely with Samsung building blocks. With the MDX controller, NAND and DRAM production in-house, Samsung aims to deliver the total package for their datacenter customers.
On the enterprise side, things were even more veiled. Unless you were a Tier-1 OEM, you had a difficult time procuring Samsung enterprise drives. Many distributors simply did not carry them as part of their line card, so small and mid-sized companies were out of luck. Today for review I’ve got another Samsung product, it’s another optical drive, but it’s one that goes in your computer. Specifically it’s the SH-B123L 12X BD-Rom/DVD Writer, or it’s a Blu-Ray drive with DVD writer functionality as well. This drive at 12X is supposedly one of the fastest in production right now, making it rather special. the drive itself has a unique look to it that I like, it’s not cluttered with logos and badges like other drives, and the drive tray front is actually mirrored with the Blu-Ray logo on it. The drive is physically small in size making it perfect for compact cases like an HTPC would have, it’s quiet and it’s a decent product…
The most confusing thing to me is why Samsung, a company that makes one of the top SSDs on the market, would venture elsewhere to supply SSDs for their own Ultrabook, an Ultra that is arguably the best on the market in many respects. Netbooks are wonderful things truly, they’ve changed the shape of how we think of portable computers but with that portability comes sacrifice. Sure you could put everything on a USB drive but with movies that would require a lot of work really to rip them etc, so the other option to to get yourself a nice external DVD drive.
