For most of us the AMD HD6990 is a pipe dream, the cost is very hard to justify. With the recent release of nVidia’s GTX550 ti, AMD have decided to update their popular HD5770, with the new HD6790 targeting the £120 sector. Today we are looking at the custom Sapphire HD6790 model which features an enhanced heatpipe cooler and PCB design.

Today, AMD releases an answer to NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 550 Ti and closes the performance gap between the low-end Radeon HD 5770 and mid-end Radeon HD 6850. The new Radeon HD 6790 is based on the cut-down Barts GPU used in the Radeon HD 6850 cards and has the MSRP of $149.
Nvidia’s GTX590 has been launched to a mixed reception and with the array of VRM hardware related issues many people are turning their attention to the GTX580, which could still be Nvidia’s finest hour. Many 580′s have won KitGuru’s highest awards and rightly so because this solution still remains the fastest single GPU graphics card on the market.
Earlier in the week we took a look at AMD (and Sapphires) new midrange DirectX 11 GPU and commented at the time that the refresh of lower end parts from 5000 to 6000 series was taking some time. The 6790 filled the gap in the 6000 series at around £110 which left the sub £100 mark to populate and today we get a taste of one model that AMD has to offer in that area with a look at the 6450 which will hit retail in a couple of weeks time.
Many readers looking at this review today will already have a performance gaming system and others will be contemplating a second system, hooked into a new high definition television for light gaming and media demands. To specifically target this sector AMD are releasing a very low cost Direct X 11 solution – the HD6450. This not only will cover media and light gaming duties, but can actually be used for multiple screen gaming.
I always seem to start these reviews by stating that the series of the card we're looking at is one of my favorite. It's not just some generic introduction and I really am a large fan of series' like the IceQ from HIS, Vapor-X from Sapphire, SOC from GIGABYTE and most of all, the MSI series including the Cyclone, HAWK and Lightning which we're looking at today.
Today we are looking at the PNY GTX570. This card is a reference NVIDIA design equipped with 1280MB of GDDR5. The PNY GTX 570 offers full DirectX 11 support and ships with the core clock speeds of 732 MHz and the 1280 MB of GDDR5 is clocked to an effective 3800 MHz.
Nach oben hin hat AMD seine Produktpalette mit der Radeon HD 6990 abgeschlossen - zumindest bis der nächste Shrink gegen Ende des Jahres erwartet wird. Auch wenn die Radeon-HD-6800-Serie missverständlich präsentiert und positioniert wurde, so stellt sie doch eine sehr effiziente Abrundung der aktuellen Produktpalette dar. Um auch den günstigen OEM-Markt bedienen zu können, entschied man sich für eine Umbenennung der Radeon HD 5770 und 5750. Doch der informierte Käufer lässt sich nicht in jedem Fall so leicht blenden und auch um einen Gegenspieler für die NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti zu haben, musste ein weiteres Produkt her. Die Radeon HD 6790 wird schon namentlich unterhalb der Radeon-HD-6800-Serie angesiedelt, in den Benchmarks werden wir sehen, wo sie sich tatsächlich einordnet.
