"With the recent release of the Radeon 6990 AMD overtook the GTX 580 in framerate performance, giving them the chance to claim they had the fastest graphics card available. On launch day we all knew that this might not last for long though as it was clear that NVIDIA was readying their long awaited dual GPU upgrade. Today that product is released and it is called the GTX 590.

Voici le test de la carte qui nous a fait craquer, avec un design sorti de nulle part, la fameuse Phantom de Gainward. Le constructeur a en effet quelque peu révolutionné le milieu des cartes graphiques en présentant un système de refroidissement peu conventionnel : les ailettes sont en effet les premiers éléments visibles sur la carte, exit donc le ou les traditionnels ventilateurs encadrés souvent d’un bouclier. Les quatre caloducs visibles en bas de la carte ne gâchent nullement le spectacle, bien au contraire. Nous sommes donc face à une très belle carte. Mais est-elle perf ?
I was really looking forward to testing this setup because I think it's something that's very plausible for a lot of people who have got the money to spend. Jump back a few months and we thought we'd see the HD 6990 4GB launch towards the end of last year; December was the date getting thrown around. Instead, what happened was the HD 6970 which we thought would launch in November launched in December and the HD 6990 became a bit of a quiet card. We knew it existed, we knew it was coming, but a month turned into a much longer wait. So if you're looking for a new video card to get some holiday gaming in, you figure you'll just go down the HD 6970 path and maybe later look at the dual GPU option that AMD offer.

The 6990 was yet ANOTHER launch from AMD that had no publicity whatsoever. Cast your mind back to the 6800 and 6950/6970 launches and i bet even then you can’t remember much about them. There’s a very good reason why, and it’s all down to AMD themselves who don’t believe in fancy, extravagant launches but yet prefer to just release a product with no big bang or anything.
