Over the past several years of testing desktop graphics hardware, I've enjoyed a unique perspective of the internal happenings that remain hidden from the public. Much like politics, there is the truth, and then there's what you've been convinced into believing. I've watched their tactics, and witnessed their desperate attempts to sway consumer opinion. As competition for sales within the desktop graphics segment provokes fierce competition, it also raises the stakes for the companies involved. NVIDIA's Fermi GF110-powered GeForce GTX 580 sets the standard, but will AMD's VLIW4 architecture Cayman GPU save the Radeon HD 6970? In this editorial article, I'll share my opinion of what appears to be the last stand between the AMD Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce desktop graphics platform.

The GTX 460 Black video card from ECS is another product that comes with the high performance Arctic Cooling Accelero Turbo Pro cooler, it's also overclocked from the factory. Its performances are very close to the previously reviewed Calibre X460G and the fan speeds are much lower than the ones from the Sparkle model.

With the release of the HD 6000 series you can be forgiven for wondering why we're testing not only a HD 5000 series card, but a low end HD 5450. Well, the reason we're doing it is because HIS are bring us something a little different to the table this time around.

I can honestly say I wasn't 100% sure we would see this day, this year. Twelve months ago it was all about the GTX 480 which at this stage was already delayed by a month. Jump forward twelve months and the HD 6900 series which was due to come out this time last month wasn't here.

So we checked out the HD 6950 already and it's time to check out the big brother to the card; the HD 6970. We left feeling a bit of mixed emotion when it came to the HD 6950; it offered great value for its price bracket, but the said price bracket doesn't really have any competition. Instead, the card sits between others.

Today the Radeon 6970 and 6950 hit the market and we have XFX branded models on our test bench. We will be putting the 6900 series through a selection of real world gaming, CPU computing and stereoscopic 3D tests against the GTX 580 and 570 to see where these new products fit in the market. Added to that are 2-way and 3-way CrossFire testing and a look at the power, noise and thermal performance of the cards to ensure a thorough evaluation of the latest and greatest from AMD.

After an unexpected delay (and plenty of rumors that soon followed), AMD's Radeon HD 6970 and Radeon HD 6950 finally see the light of day. The Cayman GPU brings a new VLIW4 core design that enables better efficiency and improved tessellation performance among others. AMD has positioned the HD 6970 as the superior enthusiast GPU, while the HD 6950 is touted to be in a class of its own. But still, the burning question: can the AMD Radeon HD 6970 subdue NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580?

Today AMD released their Radeon HD 6900 series of video cards that use the new Cayman GPU. The Radeon HD 690 series consists of the Radeon HD 6950 and Radeon HD 6970 video cards and we have an in-depth review of them for you today. We also run them both in CrossFire to see how they scale and do all the usual tests that we throw at new video cards!
