AMD have been in charge of the DX11 battlefield since their HD5000 series cards were released last year. It took nVidia many more months to come to market with competitive solutions and while their GTX480 and GTX470 received a half hearted welcome, the GTX460 has literally taken the mid market by storm. Many partners have released custom solutions with enhanced coolers and clock speeds. The new AMD HD6870 has been released to tackle the GTX460's domination with similar pricing levels.
KitGuru is old in the tooth and likes naming conventions which don't change. With the launch of the Radeon HD 6000 series, AMD has altered its naming strategy. The high end cards will now be the 6900 series (due November) and the 6800 cards that we're looking at today, will actually be sold for less than £200 each, including VAT (we're guessing that's under $250 for our American readers). How much can any gamer get from a graphic card that costs so little?

Multi card setups continue not to be the biggest area in video cards. It probably never will be; you’ve got the people that don’t understand how it works and simply people who have no interest in running multi card setups. In saying that, though, there’s still a large group of us that love multi card setups and to be honest, NVIDIA has really spiced the category up lately thanks to the release of the GTX 460.
We’ve looked at the HD 6850 in Crossfire and that’s all great, but now it’s time to get down to business and while the HD 6870 isn’t going to be the top single GPU card from AMD (that’s reserved for the HD 6970), the aggressive pricing structure of the model means that going CF could be a very good option.

So we started with the boring stuff and checked out the HD 6850 and HD 6870 on their lonesome against a bunch of other cards. We began to have a bit of fun when we started pairing the cards together. There’s no denying, though, that for most people Crossfire isn’t an option, be it too expensive or just not really feasible.
Over the past few days there have been some issues with the HD 6850 and the 1120 Shader dilemma. The good news is that there’s no such problem with the HD 6870 and today we’ll be checking out the overclocking potential of the new top mid-range GPU from AMD, the HD 6870.
