AMD have been in charge of the DX11 battlefield since their HD5000 series cards were released last year. It took nVidia many more months to come to market with competitive solutions and while their GTX480 and GTX470 received a half hearted welcome, the GTX460 has literally taken the mid market by storm. Many partners have released custom solutions with enhanced coolers and clock speeds. The new AMD HD6870 has been released to tackle the GTX460's domination with similar pricing levels.

Today we're looking at the GIGABYTE Radeon HD 5670 vga card. At first sight nothing special about this card, apart from (reading from the box) enormeous 80mm large fan, the golden (!) plated HDMI connector and to top it off: DX11 support. Today on our test bench we have the result of ASUS' work on enhancing the 6870 design. The Radeon EAH6870 DirectCU is a factory overclocked model which claims to run cooler than the reference model and certainly looks different. We will be running it through a selection of real world tests to find out how it performs in gaming, multimedia and GPU computing tasks. These include Blu-Ray 3D, Stereoscopic 3D gaming and he latest releases such as Black Ops and H.A.W.X. 2.
NVIDIA was the first to bring 3D Blu-ray (BD) via native HDMI 1.4 to the PC, coupled with HD audio bit stream support in the GTX 460, GTS 450 and GT 430 family of GPUs the home theater PC (HTPC) market has become much more interesting for the enthusiast. A few weeks back MissingRemote took a look at the GTS 450, and while it was a surprisingly good fit it is a little too much GPU for non-gamers. With 96 stream processors, a 128-bit memory bus and only 4 ROPs the GT 430’s hardware is unsuitable for more than casual gaming, but these limitations translate directly into lower power consumption and a format more suitable for use in a HTPC. There is a danger in removing too much hardware from the GPU, read on to find out if NVIDIA hits the HTPC sweet spot.
