$500 is not much to pay for someone determined to have the best of the best video card, but this only describes a handful of well-off individuals. The rest of us have to make trade-offs; naturally, we want the biggest bang for our buck. Cards like the GeForce GTX 465 exist to fill that niche; they offer performance that's fairly close to their top-end brethren for a more reasonable price. Sparkle has sent us a card that looks to be gunning for that market of enthusiastic-gamer-who-isn't-filthy-rich, based on the GeForce GTX 465 using nVidia's reference design.

The GeForce GTX 460, which is being released today, is the latest DirectX 11-based graphics chip from NVIDIA. Video cards based on this new GPU will be available between USD 200 (768 MB version) and USD 229 (1 GB version), making them the most affordable DirectX 11 video cards based on an NVIDIA solution. With recent price cuts conducted by AMD/ATI, this new graphics processor competes directly with Radeon HD 5830. Let's see how this factory-overclocked version from MSI dubbed N460GTX Cyclone 768D5/OC fared in our tests.

The GTX 460 models are coming in thick and fast with the next one to go on the chopping block that is the TweakTown testbed being a version from Palit. This seems to be a new series from Palit. While we're familiar with the Sonic series which tend to revolve around the card being overclocked and the Super series letting us know the card would be carrying more memory, we're not too sure about the Sonic Platinum one that we're looking at today.

The GTX 465 performs well for its price and responds well to overclocking which seems consistent with its bigger brothers. The GTX 465 gives Nvidia a lower priced DirectX 11 part to compete with ATi’s HD 5800 series cards which have seemingly had a stranglehold on the market. You also get the latest benefits of Nvidia’s cards including 3D Vision Surround, PhysX and Purevideo HD.

NVIDIA seem to be offering high end performance at a mid range price level. For you, the consumer, there's nothing better. We all love a good bang for buck and that seems to be what NVIDIA are delivering with the GTX 460.
