At the launch of any new GPU we always try to make an effort to put a reference based video card up for testing as it's the best model to set a baseline for what we're dealing with when it comes to a new model. At the same time, though, we be fair and in a first come first serve basis the XFX HD 7950 Black Edition Double Dissipation 3GB was the first to arrive at our labs and not only did it carry with itself an aftermarket cooler, but also an out of the box overclock.
Today, though, we take a step back and look at a Radeon HD 7950 from HIS that carries with it what should be the reference cooler along with the standard reference clocks. Of course before we get into the performance side of things there are a few other areas we need to look at.

The Radeon HD 7770 Black Super Overclocked Edition Double Dissipation is a video card from XFX featuring the new "Cape Verde" mainstream GPU. The card is cooled by the new dual fan cooling system from the same manufacturer, which is both efficient and silent, the GPU reaching no more than 65 degrees after 15 minutes of stress testing in Furmark. The card comes pre-overclocked and still has some headroom left without the need of raising the stock voltage.

While the HD 7700 series left us feeling overall pretty flat, the same can't be said for AMD's new HD 7900 series which offered us awesome performance. Along with strong numbers, though, we saw the new 28nm based cards run cooler, quieter and draw less power at both idle and load - they impressed us a lot.
We've got our fingers crossed that the HD 7800 series sits more in line with the HD 7900 series than it does the HD 7700 series. Considering AMD also have no older previous generation video cards at the $249 price point for the HD 7850 and $349 price point for the HD 7870, we're already off to a better start.

Firing up 3DMark 11 we ended up with a score of P3580 which is exactly what we'd expect from the HD 7770. It's not a bad score, but our issue has always been compared to the HD 6870 which sits at a similar price point at the moment, the HD 7770 comes off looking quite overpriced.
What was really nice though was the cooler which let the GPU sit at 35c when idle and still quite a cool 51c at load. More surprising, though, was the cooler which came in at 54.4dB at idle and 55.1dB at load. These are good numbers which see this as the second coolest running card and quietest active cooled card we've tested recently.
