Last week we reviewed one of the finest graphics cards we have had in our labs, the Asus GTX580 Direct CU II. This modified card design overclocked to levels we thought impossible and operated at temperatures which other manufacturers have struggled to achieve.

Ah I am back to reviewing video cards, it has actually been a little while since I’ve taken a look at a current generation card, but over the past couple of weeks I have caught back up and today I am taking a look at an awesome card from ASUS. Many of ASUS’s non-reference cards feature their DirectCU II cooling system and so does this card, but this card also features a 12-phase VRM that has super alloy caps and chokes, ASUS’s VGA hotwire that allows you to easily check voltages on the card and this single card can drive up to six screens! The card we are taking a look at today is the 28nm ASUS HD 7970 DirectCU II 3GB! Read on as we take a look at this impressive card!

One thing that really sets the ASUS Direct CU II 7970 card apart is its ability to be connected directly to a supported ASUS motherboard and then control all elements of the cards voltage directly through the motherboard’s BIOS, which helps insure a much more stable and direct control set than your average VGA card. Professional overclockers, you know those crazy fools that use LN2, will be very pleased with their ability to custom control the GPU and its voltage options. GPU Tweak’s latest version has many of the previous bugs fixed and seemed to be working fine now and can be a solid tool for monitoring, changing fan speeds, adjusting voltage and core and memory speeds all from the Windows 7 environment.

We will be running this enhanced version of the 6970 through a selection of real world tests to find out how it compares to the GTX 570 and will include maximum overclock results in each case... all on an i7 CPU running at 4.4GHz.

Today on our test bench we have the result of ASUS' work on enhancing the 6870 design. The Radeon EAH6870 DirectCU is a factory overclocked model which claims to run cooler than the reference model and certainly looks different. We will be running it through a selection of real world tests to find out how it performs in gaming, multimedia and GPU computing tasks. These include Blu-Ray 3D, Stereoscopic 3D gaming and he latest releases such as Black Ops and H.A.W.X. 2.

The ASUS GTX760 DirectCU Mini OC is without a doubt the fastest graphics card in the world that's shorter than 18 cm. So if you're looking for a powerful graphics card for your compact Mini-ITX PC, this ASUS card is a good option. It's just as fast as the full-size GTX 760s, and only slightly more expensive. The only trade-off is the amount of noise the compact cooler produces.

AMD have had it all their own way in 2012 as Nvidia have taken longer than expected to launch their latest ‘Kepler’ hardware. The guys in green want to reclaim the high end performance throne with the ‘fastest, most efficient GPU ever built’ and today we are looking at the latest high end GTX680 graphics card, courtesy of ASUS.

We really like the GeForce GTX 680. For little over a dozen quid extra you can buy the ASUS GTX680-DC2T-2GD5, the DirectCU II Top version. The GPU on this card runs at a 13 percent higher clock frequency which does result in improved performance. More important is the improved cooling, despite its higher clock speed the card remains 20 degrees cooler. Moreover, this excellent cooling performance doesn't cause more noise. Because of these qualities, the ASUS card has better overclocking potential. You do need to keep in mind however that the graphics card takes up three entire expansion slots.
