So we checked out the HD 6950 already and it's time to check out the big brother to the card; the HD 6970. We left feeling a bit of mixed emotion when it came to the HD 6950; it offered great value for its price bracket, but the said price bracket doesn't really have any competition. Instead, the card sits between others.

With lots of rumours about AMD and Nvidia releasing new cards in 2012, we find a lot of graphics card manufacturers clinching on to the life of the current cards and trying to spice things up to give a breath of fresh air to an already old card.
The 6970 isn’t exactly old, as it’s still very current, but with a fast paced industry like this one, technology is old before its even been released. This is down to the manufacturer’s starting the thought process on its sucessor already, even at the early stages, and that’s a good thing, as it keeps the tech fast moving and invites new things to be brought to the table.

The 6990 was yet ANOTHER launch from AMD that had no publicity whatsoever. Cast your mind back to the 6800 and 6950/6970 launches and i bet even then you can’t remember much about them. There’s a very good reason why, and it’s all down to AMD themselves who don’t believe in fancy, extravagant launches but yet prefer to just release a product with no big bang or anything.

We've got all our slide decks from AMD and some images from Sapphire. We'll tell you all the stuff we normally would in a video card review outside of the performance of course. Because there's so much to cover as well, it means we can get the performance article to you even faster while making sure we can cover as much information about the new dual GPU beast from AMD.

We're going to keep this short and sweet because we know all you really care about is the results. To quickly summarize exactly what we're doing here today, though, we're firing up the latest beta build of MSI Afterburner and cranking even more volts through the two GPUs that are placed on that single PCB.

You might've heard us mention this new "AUSUM" mode a bit in our recent Sapphire HD 6990 4GB. If you missed out reading our Sapphire HD 6990 Technical Preview, I'd highly recommend you check it out to see exactly what it does, even if you just jump to page 3 which covers "AUSUM" mode and the Dual BIOS switch. Due to the fact we've already covered the Sapphire HD 6990 in quite a lot of detail, we'll just be getting straight into the specifications of the card when we flick that Dual BIOS switch to AUSUM mode.

I really thought it would be more of a race to the release of a Dual GPU card. We heard rumors that NVIDIA would have something at CeBIT, but that’s come and gone and nothing was really announced or mentioned. It was similar for the AMD camp, but over that time we knew that the card was coming out within the second week of March. Instead it seems the NVIDIA Dual GPU card has gone a little quiet and the AMD offering has arrived. It’s quite possible that NVIDIA want to make sure they’re offering a faster card than the AMD one and it’s going to take this card to be released before they know exactly what kind of performance they’re aiming for.

AMD's Radeon HD 7730 is a video card model we haven't heard a lot about. Today we find out if there's a reason for that.

We have a quick look at a low profile version of the Radeon HD 7750 from Sapphire, which is suited to smaller systems such as those using Mini-ITX motherboards and cases.
