AMDs Kassenschlager, die Radeon HD 5770, inzwischen in HD 6770 umgetauft, war bis zum Erscheinen Nvidias GeForce GTX 550 Ti alleine in ihrem Preissegment. Doch durch das Gegenstück der Konkurrenz fühlt sich AMD deutlich bedrängt und bringt mit der Radeon HD 6790 eine "Barts"-Grafikkarte auf den Markt, welche die Konkurrenz und die noch auf "Juniper" basierende HD 6770 auf Abstand halten soll und drängt den Performance-Chip der Radeon HD 6800-Modelle in den Mainstream. With the release of NVIDIAs GTX 550 Ti at $150 a few weeks ago the market changed slightly and AMD had a new product to consider, today we see their response in the form of the 6790, our first 6700 series product and on our test bench is Sapphires version. We will be putting it up against the 550 Ti (as well as a few other products) in a selection of the latest games, media playback and GPU computing tests to establish how good the new Radeon is.

The HD 6000 series is a big deal. It’s not just because it’s a new generation of cards, but it’s also the end of an era. The HD 6000 series ultimately marks the end of the ATI name; instead we’ll be using the AMD name hereon. We get the feeling that AMD are off to a bit of a shakey start when it comes to this series, as the naming has caused some confusion out the gate.
Last week when I started to receive HD 6850 samples, as usual I take the normal GPU-Z screen shot and discover that the numbers are wrong or unknown in GPU-Z 0.4.6. This isn't unusual at the launch of a new card. Anyway, later that day GPU-Z 0.4.7 came out and it displayed everything. Unfortunately the Shaders showed as 1120, where it should've been 960. I checked my other HD 6850 and it had the same thing, so I put it down to a software error.

Sapphires "Toxic"-Serie steht dabei schon seit dem R420 (Sapphire Radeon X800) für Taktraten am Limit, verbunden mit einer effizienteren Kühlung. Bisher konnte Sapphire diesem Anspruch gerecht werden, doch mit diesem Test wollen wir ermitteln, ob dies auch bei der Radeon HD 6850 Toxic gelungen ist.
Sapphire rarely does anything half-heartedly though and the focus of today's review is their take on an enhanced 6850. This is more than just a new cooler and factory overclock though as they have completely changed the product to enhance its performance and overclocking potential. Read on to find out how it performs in real world gameplay with the latest games, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, F1 2010 (DX11 patch) and Medal of Honor. We've already seen HIS bring us the HD 6870 Turbo which was quite fast, so it comes as no surprise that Sapphire has come out with a TOXIC version of the HD 6850. Considering AMD left it up to the AIB to handle the HD 6850, it really doesn't come as a surprise since they've probably been working on the model for a while.
The standard AMD Radeon HD 6850 graphics card by SAPPHIRE comes clocked at 775MHz on the core and 1000MHz on the memory. For those that want to take it up to another level the Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 TOXIC Edition has the same internal architecture as the standard model, but the clock speeds are increased to 820MHz for the core and 1100MHz for the memory giving gamers a noticeable boost in performance.
