The idea of running multiple monitors for gaming has been a fantasy for games since gaming first came out. In the PC gaming world it has taken a long time to realize the full potential of the GPU and the limitation put on them from a single monitor setup. The amount of pixel pushing power in today's GPU has been screaming for a multi-display setup.

Today we get to see the final (for now) piece of the puzzle in the Radeon 5000 range, the 5830. We will be running the card through a selection of real world gaming tests as well as GPU computing tasks and HD playback to find out how it compares to the 5770, 5850 and GTX 275

There is a huge choice for a consumer when purchasing a graphics card, as it's not always as clear cut of choosing between different GPU manufacturers, as you then have to pick the model, and after that, even pick the brand. This can sometimes take a few hours for the most experienced user but for most will sometime take weeks and by that time a new product has most likely leapt onto the market.

The graphics solution world is constantly evolving with visual quality being stepped up at an ever-growing exponential rate. The launch of Windows 7 and with it the tantalising prospect of DirectX 11 games is perhaps not so much just a single step up but a whole flight of stairs designed to deliver unparalleled graphics quality.

I'm not sure what word I would use to describe what came to mind when I heard that Sapphire was going to be re-releasing the HD 5850 and HD 5830 to the market. First I wondered, why? - But the answer to that would be nothing more than excess cores that need to go. Next, I was a bit surprised and shocked because I felt it was more of a step backwards than anything else. The thing is, though, if the price and performance is good, why not buy one? - Both models were very good over 12 months ago, but the HD 5830 never sold. People didn't like the 30 naming scheme and it was never really accepted.

Last month Sapphire released the Radeon HD 5850 Toxic, which is a custom designed ATI Radeon HD 5850 that looks nothing like the reference designed board that it is derived from. The Sapphire 'Toxic' Radeon HD 5850 1GB card that we have here today is clocked at 765MHz on the core and 1125MHz on the memory. Read on to see how it performs and to see how far we can overclock it!

We all remember the 5000 series cards from AMD and how much of an impact they had to the market by offering great performance at a fantastic price point. Shortly after this era, the 6000 series arrived on the scene offering better tessellation and technical effects for that similar pricing structure.
