It's been a long time since we've seen a video card from ASUS, but today we check out the new HD 7790 DirectCU II OC, and see how it performs.

When there's a noticeable gap of time in between major GPU launches, one thing’s bound to happen: we're going to see models get released that slot into gaps we didn't think existed. That's the case of both AMD's Radeon HD 7790 and NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST, which retail for the same price. Let’s check them out.

These graphics cards in the 200-300 euro segment can run recent games in Full HD resolution (1920x1080). With a Radeon HD 7870 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 you do have to use normal or medium settings, but the 7950 and 660 Ti can often handle High or even Highest/Ultra settings.

This week has been a big one in the graphics card market, with two new cards launched from both the major players our there - namely AMD and then NVIDIA. The launch of the 7790 was one that AMD intended to shake the market up with, and following my review on Sapphire's 7790 and then a review on two of Club3D's 7790's in CrossFire and seeing that they perform a whole lot better than I expected compared to when I read about them, it's now time to see how just one of Club3D's cards perform in relation to Sapphires offering.

The MSI 650 Ti Boost Twin Frozr edition is a factory overclocked edition featuring the newest offering in the NVIDIA lineup. MSI has coupled the 650 Ti Boost with their custom Twin Frozr III design that has two 8cm PWN fans and 8mm heat pipes to cool the card and allow for higher overclocks. It utilizes the 28nm GK106 GPU and features 768 CUDA cores. There is 2048MB of memory on board supported by a 192bit memory bus. Connectivity options include two dual-link DVI ports, an HDMI, and a DisplayPort allowing up to four displays to be used at one time and 3DVision with three monitors. The 650 Ti Boost Twin Frozr edition also features solid capacitors and a three year warranty. The overclocked speeds are set at 1033 MHz (980MHz std) for the base clock and 1098 MHz (1033 MHz std) for the core boost clock and maintains an effective memory clock speed of 6008 MHz.

Having looked at a number of choices for the 7790 from MSI, Sapphire and Club3D, its time to see what is on offer from Asus and when we mention Asus, what comes to mind is DirectCU. We've seen some manufacturers use their own design of coolers across their own product ranges, but no-one it seems has been more successful at this over Asus. Bar only minor design tweaks to cater for different cards, the DirectCU II coolers inherently all look pretty much a part of the same family, each shrouded by the iconic black metal frame and three red stripes that run along the breadth of the cooler.
