AMD’s HD6870 has risen in popularity in recent months, as prices have continued to drop. Today in the UK you can pick up a Sapphire 1GB HD6870 for £135 inc vat, making an ideal, low cost purchase for gaming at 1080p. Today we are looking at a heavily modified card from Sapphire which is supplied with a proprietary two fan cooling system and custom PCB design.

When KitGuru reviewed Sapphire’s HD5770 Flex Edition last year, it walked away with our top award. It was not only an amazing productivity board, but in a CrossfireX configuration it was capable of reasonable frame rates across three screens. Today we are looking at the new Sapphire HD6870 Flex Edition, a more powerful update in the FleX series. We will not only be testing this across three screens, but across four screens at 7680×1080 resolution in a CrossfireX configuration.

In February I reviewed several HD7750 and HD7770 graphics cards and was ultimately left with mixed feelings. I appreciated the commendable power consumption and modest heat output, but I felt that it was a sideways step for AMD. They seemed more focused on announcing that they had released the first graphics card at a ’1 GHZ clock speed’ while failing to highlight that they had stripped out a substantial amount of stream processors.
