After months of rumours and media hype, AMD's new flagship graphics card is here. We have a launch-day review for you guys to read and we're putting this brand new GPU through its paces on the eTeknix graphics card test system. We're very excited to bring you this review because everyone loves to see how a new flagship GPU performs and what it can deliver, even if you have no intention of ever buying it. The AMD R9 290X is a brand new GPU crafted from the same 28nm process as the HD 7000 series but using a revised architecture design (GCN 2.0 vs GCN) and a new GPU die codenamed "Hawaii".
The AMD R9 290X brings a number of new features to the table which we will cover briefly but first let's check a run down of the specifications. AMD's R9 290X is a big step up from the R9 280X (HD 7970) featuring 768 more stream processors, 1.5 more TFLOPS of compute performance, 32GB/s more memory bandwidth, double the number of ROPs and much more. A default clock speed of up to 1GHz on the core and up to 5GHz on the memory is deployed, this will vary dynamically as it is adjusted by AMD's revised PowerTune technology, which leads us on nicely to the next part - the new features of the R9 290X.

Even the most hardcore gamers wouldn’t want a component in their system that sounds like the jet engine of a Messerschmitt Me 262, one of the first jet powered fighter aircraft. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is designed to be well balanced for performance, power usage, and noise levels. With the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti adds to the well rounded GTX 700 series of GPUs and utilizes the GK110 for its core.

Today AMD is launching yet another graphics card, the AMD Radeon R9 270, which theoretically could be called the successor to the HD 7850 or the HD 7870. Spec-wise, the R9 270 looks very, very good. Whereas the HD 7850 was a logical step down from the HD 7870, the R9 270 on the other hand doesn’t seem like much of a step down from the...

It has certainly been an interesting couple of months for the high end gaming enthusiast. In October AMD brought out their R9 290 and R9 290X which took the performance crown from Nvidia. We felt both cards were fantastic, but the substandard reference cooler forced us to offer a hesitant recommendation, and we have advised people to wait on the custom cooled solutions. The Nvidia GTX780Ti was then released earlier this month, reclaiming the crown. While AMD partners still scramble to bring improved R9 290/290X models to market, Nvidia are already a leap ahead. Today we review a highly customised, overclocked three fan card from market leader, Palit.

AMD’s R9 270 graphics card is arguably the single most important GPU release of this year from AMD. It offers a never before seen level of performance at its $179 price point, more or less totally beating Nvidia’s GTX 660 – especially when overclocking comes into play. The reason it is so important is because, despite all the media hype, the sub $200 price point is where the vast majority of graphics cards are bought – the R9 270 is going to be very important for AMD’s competitiveness.Today we have another one of those important R9 270 GPUs and the one we have is from renowned AMD partner Sapphire Technology. This is only the second AMD R9 270 to come through the doors here at eTeknix, for those who follow our reviews you may have already read the launch-day review of the ASUS R9 270 Direct CU II OC graphics card we produced. Sapphire’s R9 270 variant is quite different to the ASUS model we reviewed in that this will be hitting the UK shelves at £135, 10% less than the ASUS model which fetches £150. That said we can see what Sapphire are doing – producing a super-aggressively priced R9 270 to target the masses. Yet this graphics card doesn’t skimp on a lot because for its highly affordable pricing you still get a custom cooler and a factory overclock of 945MHz core, up from 925MHz stock.
