Rounding off the 7000 series line-up, can the 7870 offer a fair balance between price and power?

After a long and turbulent few months filled withmuch speculation and deliberate misinformation, we finally have NVIDIA'sbelated response to the the 28nm AMD Southern Islands GPUs - the GeforceGTX 680 (current name, among former identities). In the first of manyKeplers that we will be evaluating, we take a look at ASUS's referenceoffering and see if its indeed a worthy contender (or pretender) to thereigning king of the hill Radeon HD 7970. Overclocked benchmarks alsoincluded!

The Lightning series of video cards from MSI are just one of those series that I look forward to probably a little bit more than most other series on the market. MSI are consistent with the series and we have never been disappointed with any model that gets the Lightning treatment.
The latest video card to get the Lightning treatment is the AMD Radeon HD 7970 and as always we hope it brings us some serious overclocking potential like previous Lightning models have. The HD 7970, though, is a good jumping point for MSI as the model itself has proved to perform quite well when it's come to overclocking. With the general MSI tweaks, though, we expect some serious clocks.

At the end of the day we saw an overall performance increase of 63% when going from a single GeForce GTX 680 Surround to a 2-way SLI Surround multi-monitor setup from the seven game titles we tested. This is a nice performance gain and it did make for an overall better gaming experience at a resolution of 5760x1080

Mit „Ivy Bridge“ will Intel die Grafikeinheit nicht nur deutlich verbessert, sondern auch über das Niveau von AMDs „Llano“-APU gehoben haben. Ist die Mission erfolgreich?

The HIS 7850 Fan 2GB is another solid offering from HIS. It may not be the iCooler version, but it still maintains quiet operation and keeps temperatures cool. The 7850 Fan offers solid performance to match up with a full feature set that includes support for up to four monitors, PCI-e 3.0 and 2GB of GDDR5. The icing on the cake is solid overclocking room and performance gains.

We really like the GeForce GTX 680. For little over a dozen quid extra you can buy the ASUS GTX680-DC2T-2GD5, the DirectCU II Top version. The GPU on this card runs at a 13 percent higher clock frequency which does result in improved performance. More important is the improved cooling, despite its higher clock speed the card remains 20 degrees cooler. Moreover, this excellent cooling performance doesn't cause more noise. Because of these qualities, the ASUS card has better overclocking potential. You do need to keep in mind however that the graphics card takes up three entire expansion slots.

What do you do when you have a succesful high-end video card and your main competitor suddenly introduces an ever faster card? You go back to the drawingboard and think of a way to squeeze more performance out of your existing products. That's exactly what AMD did with the Radeon HD 7970, the end result of which is introduced today in the form of the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. It's all in the name, this is a Radeon HD 7970 with a 1GHz GPU with turbo mode.
