NVIDIA tends to dominate the field when it comes to graphics processing power, leaving AMD scrambling to remain competitive by reducing prices on their products to add value for an aging technology. Recently the AMD Radeon R9 290X was revealed as the brand’s flagship graphics card, virtually occupying future shelf space for around $599 and expected to compete against NVIDIA’s less-expensive GeForce GTX 780 that has been available since May (2013). Not one to allow competition into their high-end territory, NVIDIA pushes back with the introduction of GeForce GTX 780 Ti. Capable of producing the fastest and most efficient graphics power ever available, GeForce GTX 780 Ti offers 25% more processing cores than GTX 780 while leaving room to deliver record-level 336 GB/sec GDDR5 memory bandwidth so to leave no doubt who controls the top-end of discreet graphics.!
We often get asked by readers what the best video card is for gaming on a single 4K display or an NVIDIA Surround or AMD Eyefinity multi-display setup. We addressed this question in October with a look at the just released AMD Radeon R9 290X versus the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 on our Sharp PN-K321 32″ 4K Ultra HD Monitor at 3840 x 2160. A ton has changed over the past two months as both NVIDIA launched their new flagship card, the GeForce GTX 780 Ti, and both AMD and NVIDIA have released new drivers that help improve gaming performance.

The GeForce GTX 780 is based on the 7.1 Billion transistor behemoth GK110 GPU used by the GTX TITAN. The GTX 780 delivers a massive 70% performance upgrade compared to the GTX 580, equipped with 2,304 CUDA cores and 3GB of memory across a 384-bit interface. The GeForce GTX 780 also inherits GPU Boost 2.0 from the GTX TITAN, providing superior clock speed boosts through smarter headroom assessment and optimized boost algorithm.
The performance decrease that we expected to see from Titan was present, but not nearly as bad as we expected. For example in Metro: Last Light at 5760x1080 the GeForce GTX 780 was just 9% slower than the GeForce GTX Titan. At 2560x1600 and 1920x1080 screen resolutions that performance gap narrowed to just 4-6 percent, which is on the borderline of being significant. Our testing in Battlefield 3, Bioshock Infinite, Far Cry 3, Hitman: Absolution and Tomb Raider all showed similar results. Just for fun we also benchmarked the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 video card that came out in November 2010 and found that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 nearly doubles the performance of that card. If you happen to have one of those cards and are looking for a significant performance jump before you update, you finally have a good option and it no longer costs $999...
Late May Nvidia introduced the GeForce GTX 780 which we called the 'Titan light' since it was based on the same high-end GK110 GPU used in the very expensive GeForce GTX Titan. You can find that original review here. Tests indicated that it was an average of 8 percent slower than the GTX Titan, not bad for a card that costs £548 compared to the £900 Titan. The GTX 780 gives you really good value for your money in the high-end segment.

When you think of graphics cards and manufacturers, you automatically think of NVIDIA and the GTX range; regardless of what side of the fence you are on. Without a doubt, they produce some of the best graphics cards in the world, but that performance comes at a hefty price, the current most powerful single GPU card sits at around $950; not exactly sofa change. Today we have the newest Maxwell based graphics card and the first (and likely only) Ti model of the GTX 900 series; the GeForce GTX 980Ti.
