I just want to say before I get started that what we're doing today isn't really practical in any sense of the word, except for the fact that it can be done. Before we really get into it, let's just put into perspective what this is going to cost to set up. With the HD 5970 TOXIC being rumored at $999 U.S. and the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 480 we're using today costing about $500 U.S. - you're talking about a $1500 U.S. video card setup alone.

Asus is one of the first manufacturers to actually have GeForce GTX 480s available to buy (at least intermittently), so we were delighted when the firm's Voltage Tweak edition of the card arrived in the ITShootOut.com office. This happened to coincide rather nicely with the arrival of our 2GB Sapphire Toxic edition 5870 sample, allowing us to pit these two single-GPU flagships against each other to see which card comes out on top.

We've already had a good look at the GTX 465 in single form. Today we're going to be looking at it in SLI form and this is an important form for a few reasons. The first is that we want to know how the mid range cards perform in SLI. More importantly, though, this is going to be a great setup for people who are interested in going down the Surround Gaming path.

The Sapphire HD5550 Ultimate Edition we are looking at today is a passively cooled solution and is modestly priced at around £70 inc vat in the UK. Could this be the perfect, cool running, low power HTPC card with DX11 support?

Being in the review game, I know I have to keep newer products in my PC just so I have parts on hand to be able to test new coolers with. I abused my 9800 GTX+ pretty good over the past year, but it was time to move on to bigger and better things. That in mind, I decided to go with a pair of EVGA GTX 470 SC's to run in SLI. Out of the box these cards were warm and in my pursuit to beat the snot out of them for benchmarks, I soon found the 470 to be nothing less than a nine and a half inch inferno, especially with the BIOS fan profile. Changing the fan profile to a more aggressive slope was some help, but definitely not the solution I needed if I planned to be able to get the last drop out of my cards.

The GTX 460 has been talked about for a while now along with the potential of the card when it comes to overclocking. While we won't be diving into that today in much detail, we're finding that most companies are choosing to ignore the stock clocks from NVIDIA and offer us overclocked variants straight away. In the coming week or two we'll be no doubt looking at how far we can push the card.

Epic.... That’s a word I’ll be using a lot over the next week. In a day’s time from having finished writing this article, I’m off to Japan to help tackle 3D Mark Vantage with fellow bencher Matt, aka rdash, and it will be EPIC!

The MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5 video card looks great on paper, but how well does that custom Cyclone cooler do in the real world? We take this factory overclocked video card from 725MHz on the GF104 'Fermi' GPU core well past 900MHz, so it looks like it is the real deal. Read on to see what MSI has done with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 1GB video card with their custom cooled N460GTX Cyclone!

Today we have the XFX Radeon 5830 XXX Edition on our test bench and it will be put through its paces in a selection of real world gaming, multimedia and GPU computing tasks. As always these will feature DirectX 11 titles such as Alien Vs. Predator but we have also updated our test suite to include a first look at Mafia 2, Lost Planet 2 as well as StarCraft 2 and 3D Blu-Ray.
