With the arrival of a new high-end GPU, hardware enthusiasts immediately look forward to a MSI Lightning graphics card based on the new chip. That card, the R7970 Lightning, has been on the market for a couple of months now. Last week the manufacturer launched a Hawk version of the Radeon HD 7870. Hardware.Info tested and overclocked both video cards.
It's too bad that the Boost Edition doesn't overclock better than last year’s Lightning with its standard cooler despite the different chip. The limit is again 1240 MHz for the GPU and 1780 MHz for the memory. ASUS proved with the Matrix HD7970 Platinum that a more heavy-duty cooler and a few other tricks can take it further. If you plan on overclocking with just the standard cooler, then that Matrix HD7970 Platinum is a better choice in our opinion, and both cards cost about the same.
In the last month AMD’s partners have been unveiling their custom cooled graphics cards and we have already reviewed the latest Dual X HD7970 Overclock Edition from Sapphire and the HD7970 X Edition from VTX3D. Overclocking the MSI R7970 Lighting was a blast and the fact that we could take it from 1070 MHz on the core all the way up to 1275 MHz was impressive. OC stands for overclocked meaning it comes from the factory with a slightly better clock speed from what ATI had intended.
