With the arrival of a new high-end GPU, hardware enthusiasts immediately look forward to a MSI Lightning graphics card based on the new chip. That card, the R7970 Lightning, has been on the market for a couple of months now. Last week the manufacturer launched a Hawk version of the Radeon HD 7870. Hardware.Info tested and overclocked both video cards.

It's too bad that the Boost Edition doesn't overclock better than last year’s Lightning with its standard cooler despite the different chip. The limit is again 1240 MHz for the GPU and 1780 MHz for the memory. ASUS proved with the Matrix HD7970 Platinum that a more heavy-duty cooler and a few other tricks can take it further. If you plan on overclocking with just the standard cooler, then that Matrix HD7970 Platinum is a better choice in our opinion, and both cards cost about the same.

In the last month AMD’s partners have been unveiling their custom cooled graphics cards and we have already reviewed the latest Dual X HD7970 Overclock Edition from Sapphire and the HD7970 X Edition from VTX3D. Today we are looking at MSI’s flagship R7970 Lightning with custom twin fan cooler and proprietary PCB design.

Overclocking the MSI R7970 Lighting was a blast and the fact that we could take it from 1070 MHz on the core all the way up to 1275 MHz was impressive. AMD released the Radeon HD 7970 with a 925 MHz core clock, so this is a 350 MHz overclock on the core! This card was really fun to overclock on air, so we can only imagine what those with LN2 pots will be able to hit...

Today AMD is launching yet another graphics card, the AMD Radeon R9 270, which theoretically could be called the successor to the HD 7850 or the HD 7870. Spec-wise, the R9 270 looks very, very good. Whereas the HD 7850 was a logical step down from the HD 7870, the R9 270 on the other hand doesn’t seem like much of a step down from the...

MSI’s TwinFrozr Gaming series of graphics cards are becoming hugely popular among gamers – and rightly so. MSI offer the same high end dual 100mm fan TwinFrozr IV cooling solution on all the Gaming series graphics cards, even the more affordable GPUs. The TwinFrozr IV runs cool, deadly quiet and gives you bags of overclocking potential, as well as looking down-right awesome. Today we have a graphics card that will sell like Lightning (MSI branding pun intended), equipping AMD’s sweet-spot R9 270 GPU, which is essentially a underclocked R9 270X, MSI’s R9 270 TwinFrozr Gaming looks set to be a winner among gamers. It offers a super-attractive price point, great looking custom cooler and a factory overclock of 50MHz on the GPU core. The 2GB of memory is kept at the default 1400MHz/5600MHz effective reference clock speed.

We all love to play games! It is likely your dream graphics card will be either a GTX 780 Ti or R9 290X. Not fast enough for you? – then how about AMD’s R9 295X2 or Nvidia’s Titan Z? Be prepared to dig deep into your bank account at £1,100 and £2,300 respectively … yes, it really is enough to make grown men cry. Back in the real world – and if recent correspondence with our readers is anything to go by then many of you wanted to see which hardware offers a better gaming experience under the £200 ‘sweetspot’ – an R9 280 or a GTX760. So with this in mind we went shopping online.

Four 5870’s in CrossfireX with an overclocked gulftown CPU is a monster setup in anyone’s book; and they would be right. But I say NO! - We want more and by more, I mean more drama, theatrics and excitement. So, it’s time to bring out the soldering iron, strap on more copper than can sink a small boat and really get these cards pumping.

In this review we will be looking at MSI version of this new card called the Radeon HD 4890 OC. OC stands for overclocked meaning it comes from the factory with a slightly better clock speed from what ATI had intended. Typically OC cards don't overclock well but with a little tweaking you can usually squeeze out a few more frames or, simply leave the card alone and enjoy the nice performance boost.
