The HD6950 has been a big seller for AMD over the last couple of months, thanks to a combination of solid pricing and high levels of performance. When the enthusiast audience learned that the HD6950 could be easily modded into a HD6970, sales figures increased even more. Powercolor have capitalised on this easy software modification by releasing the HD6950 PCS++, a card which comes with both a HD6950 and HD6970 bios.

Last week we were looking at AMD release a new card that manages to take top spot as the fastest VGA card currently on the market. From one extreme to another, we're checking out the new baby mid-range card from NVIDIA today in the GTX 550 Ti. Like us, though, NVIDIA understand that $699 cards aren't for everyone, and really, where the bread and butter is for these companies is the mid-range market, as that's what really sells.

I was really looking forward to testing this setup because I think it's something that's very plausible for a lot of people who have got the money to spend. Jump back a few months and we thought we'd see the HD 6990 4GB launch towards the end of last year; December was the date getting thrown around. Instead, what happened was the HD 6970 which we thought would launch in November launched in December and the HD 6990 became a bit of a quiet card. We knew it existed, we knew it was coming, but a month turned into a much longer wait. So if you're looking for a new video card to get some holiday gaming in, you figure you'll just go down the HD 6970 path and maybe later look at the dual GPU option that AMD offer.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590 is a very powerful graphics card, a competitor to the recently announced Radeon HD 6990. It is much better in terms of cooler noise, its cooler being much quieter. So if you need a very powerful and quiet card, GeForce GTX 590 is your choice.

With the release of NVIDIAs GTX 550 Ti at $150 a few weeks ago the market changed slightly and AMD had a new product to consider, today we see their response in the form of the 6790, our first 6700 series product and on our test bench is Sapphires version. We will be putting it up against the 550 Ti (as well as a few other products) in a selection of the latest games, media playback and GPU computing tests to establish how good the new Radeon is.

After reviewing a few different GTX550 Ti graphic cards it does start to lose its flavor, especially when the results can be so similar. So it is a major relief to get a refreshing view of a reference card from MSI.

I hate these low to mid-range cards; it's nothing against them directly, but they're always just so slow. Sure, they might be great for the price etc. - but testing them is still an absolute pain as they're always so much slower than the stuff I'm used to testing. The whole situation is made only worse by AMD releasing three models today, albeit we're only looking at the two higher end ones of these three new models. The good news for me is that we tend to only ever look at one or two of these new models and then continue looking at the fun stuff and what people wish they could afford, but can't.

Just to keep things fresh and prevent you all from getting bored with all the headset reviews we’ve been putting out recently, here’s something a bit more internal,a GPU from HIS. This is the IceQX variant of their HD 6870 Graphics card from AMD.

Today we shall focus on four graphics cards from Sapphire: three Radeon HD 6870 and one Radeon HD 6850. Only one of those is factory-overclocked, but three out of four are custom products.
