Armed with only our fists, we slayed the murderous fire breathing dragon and rescued the princess (actually the last HD 7970 to complete our 4-way quadfire feature). This time, we have also included 5760x1080 Eyefinity tests in Battlefield 3 and DiRT3, complete with videos!

It unusual for us to miss an NDA, especially when we've got the sample on hand. The simple fact is that AMD chose to Grinch out on us and ignore the holiday spirit, a time when we tend to be able to relax for a few weeks before the CES run of products start to show up. With not only a 10 day holiday planned, but a decision to move from Perth, Australia to Taiwan just three months ago all in the works, the HD 7970 NDA was just one that wasn't going to be met, even though, our sample was sitting safely in Taiwan waiting for my arrival.
With a couple of samples built up over the last few weeks, the HD 7970 was straight on top and today we'll be finally checking out what the new model is all about. Unfortunately it wasn't just a matter of testing the HD 7970 and we could get on our way, along with that we tested a couple of other cards with the most recent drivers to see just what's going on with this new single GPU card from AMD.

AMD have lifted their partner NDA today, and in this review we will be looking at the performance of two HIS HD7970′s in a Crossfire configuration. We already know that one of these cards has claimed the top ‘single GPU’ performance spot from Nvidia’s GTX580, so how will two of them handle a variety of DX10/11 game engines across both single screen and multi screen configurations?

AMD launched their new flagship HD7970 graphics card in December, and we have been extremely impressed with the solution as it has claimed the top performance slot … knocking the GTX580 from the throne. Today AMD have lifted the NDA on partner cards and we have several reviews for your enjoyment. We had expected that there would be no partner cards with custom cooling solutions at this early stage, but XFX have surprised us by sending a ‘Double Dissipation’ model with proprietary dual fan cooler. Excited? you should be.

First up on our test bench is the HIS Radeon HD 7970 3GB. We will be putting it up against the best of the last generation in a selection of real world tests which include Battlefield 3, Star Wars: The Old Republic and Skyrim… all at 5760x1080. In addition to this we will also look at GPU computing and media performance as well as power and thermal performance.

Today we are finally able to talk about partner cards and so have paired up PowerColor's hardware in our test system and have retested the latest games such as Battlefield 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic with single and dual GPU's on the latest drivers and game patches. What does the PowerColor 7970 and CrossFire offer us? Let's find out...

What's really cool is that today we're not just looking at a reference designed card from one of the AMD partners, instead we're looking at a card that not only carries an out of the box overclock, but also carries with it a new cooling solution.
The Black Edition naming in the new XFX HD 7970 Black Edition Double Dissipation isn't anything new to us, the new Double Dissipation tag is, though, and that refers to the cooling solution they're using today.

With the only "launch day" 7970 that features an enhanced cooler and factory overclock in hand we decided to put it up against overclocked GTX 580 3GB and Radeon 6970 cards to see what the performance looked like..
