It’s no secret that PC gamers who seek realistic graphics prefer their desktop platform over the 1080p-limited console counterparts. Discrete graphics cards, the hardware added onto motherboards built for high performance, support enthusiast video resolutions as large as 2560×1600. More pixels means more power needed to produce them, so I decided to test some of the most recent graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD on our massive 30″ monitor. In this article Benchmark Reviews tests frame rate performance for the AMD Radeon R9 290X and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti at their maximum supported resolution.

This morning NVIDIA has introduced the GeForce GTX 580 video card after many weeks of rumors. It has only been seven months since NVIDIA released the GeForce GTX 480 video card, but that card is officially no longer the flagship GPU of the NVIDIA arsenal. Priced at $499, the GeForce GTX 580 comes at the same suggested retail price as the GeForce GTX 480 did, but the video card has higher clock speeds and all 512 CUDA cores enabled thanks to a new GPU die revision.

When it comes to creating a high end graphics card, very few companies can match Asus. Today we are looking at their new Matrix HD7970 Platinum graphics card, which features a hefty metal, dual fan cooler and out of the box overclocked settings. This card uses a 20 phase VRM which takes power from two 8 pin PCIe power connectors. The VRM features a sophisticated load line calibration system with manual LLC factor control which helps counter V-Droop. Is this the ultimate HD7970? Can it take the crown from the class leading Sapphire HD7970 6GB Toxic Edition which we reviewed several months ago?

It's been so long since I've looked at an ASUS video card, so long that I honestly couldn't remember the last time I saw one. I can tell you, though, it was in the day where the TOP series reigned supreme. So what's happening these days with ASUS in the video card market? Well, we haven't paid too much attention to be honest, but it's time to see what this DirectCU II series offers us.
