We got word late yesterday by a friend at NVIDIA that Best Buy had slipped up and released NVIDIA branded graphics cards on Sunday night. This is the first time that we have seen NVIDIA branded video cards being sold direct and we went to a few Best Buy stores in St. Louis and sure enough, we spotted the cards sitting on store shelves. We couldn't leave the store empty handed, so we bought the card for $299.99 and headed back to see what it was all about.

Sapphire are the biggest AMD graphics card partner and a few months ago they released an overclocked version of the 4870 (Toxic edition) carrying a custom cooling solution. However, that version only shipped with 512MB of GDDR5 memory which wasnt ideal for the growing demands of high end enthusiast users.

AMD have been in the limelight a lot as of late, especially in regards to the Radeon 6990 dual GPU monster that we looked at a little while ago. If it wasn't for the 6950 and 6970 there wouldn't have been anything to base the beast off of, therefore we thought we'd pay homage to the Radeon 6950 by taking a look at the 1GB version.

AMD have had great success with their latest 7 series of discrete graphics cards. The HD7970 led the performance charts for some time until Nvidia released their flagship single GPU, the GTX680. AMD are attempting to answer the challenge with the HD7970 ‘GHZ’ Edition, earning the moniker from the enhanced default 1ghz+ core clock speed.

Those three letters immediately conjure visions of video gaming excellence – especially when you delve into their high end product range. Without doubt, along with Sapphire, XFX have been producing some of the finest graphics cards on the market over the last decade.
