As we roll into the halfway mark for 2011, we see the latest iterations of the Catalyst drivers from AMD come in the form of the Catalyst 11.6. A little earlier than expected, the latest drivers seem to bring some nice features to the table as well as some promises of extra performance.

The general rule of thumb when it comes to models like the HD 6670 is that we look at one or two at launch and then we don't worry about it. These low to mid-range models from both NVIDIA and AMD are indeed important, but for the most part companies don't tend to mix it up too much.

The olden days saw drivers being released every so often but stepping forward into the current times and the likes of AMD, Nvidia and other manufacturers are releasing drivers much more frequently. AMD have been bang on the money every month with fresh, new drivers that claim to bring improved performance and stability to a variety of platforms. Today sees us looking at the newest set of drivers from AMD; Catalyst 11.6. This set of drivers is said to improve performance on certain games, give image stabilization to YouTube as well as other new video features that have been incorporated. Among these, we also find extra bug fixes and improved stability on Windows XP, Vista and 7.

Recently, AMD have been pushing out their latest high-powered GPU's to very impressive results. However, at the same time they have been quietly sneaking out some smaller low-priced graphics cards. In fact this is one of the cheapest DirectX 11 graphics cards money can buy which on the face of it should be able to cope with multiple screen gaming all be it not the most intensive of media and gaming scenarios.

Like the previous Dirt game, Dirt 2, the latest iteration from Codemasters, Dirt 3, is another big release for AMD. While maybe not quite as big as the second one which saw the implementation of DirectX 11, one would argue that this one could be even bigger because of the rave reviews the game has received, making it not only a game that looks good, but also a game that's good to play.

Over the last few months we've seen MSI do some wonderful things to the GTX 580, releasing the model into its Lightning series and then during Computex re-releasing the GTX 580 in 3GB form also under the Lightning series; but in this case it was the Lightning Xtreme Edition. Someone else has done something with the GTX 580, but I can't really remember who; it's probably got something to do with the fact we haven't seen it.

We all remember the 5000 series cards from AMD and how much of an impact they had to the market by offering great performance at a fantastic price point. Shortly after this era, the 6000 series arrived on the scene offering better tessellation and technical effects for that similar pricing structure.
