NVIDIA recently unveiled two new graphics technologies at the 2012 GPU Technology Conference: NVIDIA GeForce GRID and NVIDIA VGX. You're probably not familiar with either of these 'Cloud Computing' technologies, but in the next few years they'll develop to become quite commonplace. One day in the not so distant future, you could find yourself choosing between a NVIDIA GeForce GRID subscription or NVIDIA GeForce graphics card to play the latest high-end game. In this editorial I explore what these two new technologies offer, and how they will change the graphics industry.

You know the words you’re reading right now? You’re seeing them thanks to your computer’s graphics card. The game you just played? Yeah, that was the graphics card too, big guy. Without your computer’s graphics card, your monitor is as useful as a can of baked beans for viewing things.

When someone mentions the word "overclocking" we instinctively start thinking about a processor and how high we can ramp the bus speed and multiplier up to give the best possible speed. This of course gives you better value for money as you'll end up having a product that goes faster than what you paid for. Result!

Don't tell me none of you have never experienced a dead, artifacting card? I know I have, and have been stuck without a solution with a £300 paper weight.

Manufacturer's sometimes make "turbo edition" cards or factory overclocked versions to give more performance and from time to time, Inno3D also make pre-overclocked versions of their already top selling products including the GTX 460 OC that we're looking at today.

On our test bench today we have two cards from the £150-165 price range which sit on either side of the NVIDIA and AMD divide. Those products are the Inno3D GTXÂ 460 OC and PowerColor's Radeon HD 6850 and we will be putting each through a selection of real world tests to find out what their strengths and weaknesses are.

Not everyone can afford the highest specification, fastest graphics card though and for that reason, less than a month on, NVIDIA are launching the GTX 570. On our test bench we have a model from Inno3D which is factory overclocked and we will be putting it through its paces in a selection of real world tests which include Black Ops, Stereoscopic 3D gaming, GPU Computing, Blu-Ray 3D playback and we will even throw in a quick look at 3DMark 2011 Professional.

Despite the reference designs impressive cooling solution there were consumers who demanded enhanced versions of the GTX 580 with enhanced cooler. One of the latest to deliver this is Inno3D with their custom GTX 580 HAWK Edition. As well as featuring an enhanced cooler and some tweaks on the style of the card it also has 3GB of memory rather than the standard 1.5GB. Lets see how it performs in a selection of real world tests.
