Today we publish our results on a week’s worth of testing and find out if it really is such a controversial card or if it is worth talking about for completely different reasons. In addition to this we will take a look at another Radeon card … the XFX 4850 XXX which shares a similar price point to the GTS 250.

AMD launched their new flagship HD7970 graphics card in December, and we have been extremely impressed with the solution as it has claimed the top performance slot … knocking the GTX580 from the throne. Today AMD have lifted the NDA on partner cards and we have several reviews for your enjoyment. We had expected that there would be no partner cards with custom cooling solutions at this early stage, but XFX have surprised us by sending a ‘Double Dissipation’ model with proprietary dual fan cooler. Excited? you should be.

For this article we looked at the different 3DMark scores, from 3DMark06 to the latest version of 3DMark that came out this year. We took the same approach we did with the Cinebench 11.5 CPU scores, and averaged the scores of each GPU. The same GPU in different CPUs will of course perform differently, but taking the average provides a good indication of the general performance you can expect, and it serves as a good point of reference for making comparisons. Since we test more than 200 laptops each year, it should paint a fairly accurate picture.

Because of the various factors working against desktop graphics, I'd say that now is the time for manufacturers to stop building a bigger mousetrap, and instead build it better. That's what Palit does, and their approach to discreet graphics products usually follows the rule of function before fashion. In this case, it's function and realistic performance needs before fashion and marketing hype. Sure, NVIDIA would lover for you to believe that SLI is necessary to play the newest video games, but oddly enough the nearly all new games still work fairly well with a single three-generation old video card. So where's the sweet spot? Benchmark Reviews tests the Palit GeForce GTX 260 Sonic 216SP model NE3X262SFT394-PM8026 video card to see just how much money you need to spend to enjoy fast frame rates at high resolution.

When I first looked at the HD 5770 FleX I was impressed that Sapphire had taken the time to acknowledge one of the biggest issues with Eyefinity and fix it. The issue we speak of is the need to have a DisplayPort monitor to make use of the technology. For some it's not an issue, especially if you're only on one monitor and you're going to buy three new ones for your setup. If you're not, though, and you already have a couple of monitors, the need for a DP enabled one is a pain.
