ASUS’s Sabertooth motherboards have been a big hit since they were introduced, so there was no doubt there would be a Z87 Sabertooth with ASUS’s new line of Z87 motherboards. This board is of course built on the LGA1150 socket and supports Intel’s Fourth Generation Core Haswell processors. The Z87 Sabertooth still keeps the cool Thermal Armor that everyone loves, but adds on to it with the TUF Fortifier backplate. In addition to that you have things like the Thermal Radar 2, Flow Valve and Dust Defender. For those wondering about specifics this board features two PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots (x16 and x8 electrical), a single PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot (x4 electrical) and three PCI Express 2.0 x1 slots. There are 4 DIMM slots with memory support of up to 32 GB of DDR3 memory, eight SATA 6GB/s ports, 4 USB 3.0 ports and a plethora of other connections. Read on as we take a look.
The ASUS Sabertooth/TUF series of motherboards is well known throughout the computer hardware industry as being one of the most rugged motherboard designs available. ASUS put the Z87 Sabertooth that we have here today through hell and back before the motherboard is delivered to end users. Of course the motherboard has to survive this endurance test before it makes it to consumers and the fact we’ve received this one here today with its certificate of reliability tells us it has passed the strict testing procedures. The ASUS Sabertooth Z87 is a feature packed motherboard but it isn’t your average enthusiast class motherboard. Unlike most motherboards which are often targeted at budget users, gamers and overclockers the ASUS Sabertooth Z87 is aimed at at different niche – those concerned with stability, reliability and durability.
The biggest selling points and features about the ASUS Sabertooth Z87 are to do with stability, reliability and durability. They include ASUS’ newly designed TUF Thermal Armor, the TUF Thermal Radar, TUF Fortifier, Dust Defenender and TUF Engine Power Design using military-spec components. Of course it also has other ASUS mainstay features such as their UEFI BIOS, OC Tuner, USB 3.0 Boost, TurboV Core and so on. Being an Intel Z87 motherboard you’ve also got the full benefits of the Z87 chipset including native SATA III support, native USB 3.0 support and the LGA 1150 socket which includes Haswell CPU support and PCI Express Generation 3.0 support. The Z87 Sabertooth balances a combination of abundant features and high performance with the Sabertooth/TUF philosophy of stability reliability and durability.
When trying to think of a name for our look at Asus’s new Z87 mainstream motherboard options I went through countless bad jokes and Bond Goldmember comments. I came to the conclusion that much like Asus I would let the boards speak for themselves. Today we are going to take a look at the Asus Z87 Pro and Z87 Plus, both what they call Channel boards. In other words this is Asus’s standard lineup. In the past I have been extremely impressed with what Asus had to offer in their standard lineup; hopefully they can keep that up. With Intel’s fourth generation chips knocking on the door of release day, KitGuru was invited to a technical seminar held by Asus to outline the company’s products, features and plans for its range of Z87 motherboards.
ASUS released a very extensive range of Z87 motherboards for Intel’s new Haswell platform. To date we’ve already reviewed their Z87 Sabertooth and Z87-C motherboards and today we’ve got something new from their Republic of Gamers series. The ASUS Maximus Formula VI takes a very different stance to the Z87 Sabertooth, with the primary focus being on offering gamers a stylish yet high performance solution. The Maximus VI Formula is as much about the core ASUS principles of reliability, solid overclocking and added functionality as it is about Gamer aesthetics and features. ASUS have put a lot of effort into the “thermal armour-style” shroud which mainly serves aesthetic purposes and they’ve also gone to town on the main heatsink design with a similarly rugged looking aesthetic that combines the worlds of water and air cooling. Other stand out points from a design aspect include the new Supreme FX audio implementation which ASUS claims offers superior audio for gamers, and the extensive connectivity which means virtually every uncovered space on the motherboard is occupied by something important that Gamers can put to good use. After what feels like months of prepping, testing, photography, videos, and writing are finally reaching the end of our Haswell launch motherboard coverage and I think we may have saved the best for last. We haven’t covered one of Asus’s TUF Series of motherboards official although we do have one in our cooling test bench and we have seen countless boards in our reader’s rigs. So to finish things off we are going to take a look at Asus's new Micro ATX TUF Series Z87 Gryphon. Its smaller form factor is a first for the TUF line and I am very excited to see what the fuss has been about.
Haswell and the Z87 chipset may be on the horizon, but the drive to have motherboards at all price points in the market for Z77 is as fierce as ever. A large number of users are seeking the budget options, both on the grounds of backwards compatibility and also their rich set of features for their competitively low price point. Not too long ago I took a look at two of Asus' entry level boards - the P8Z77-V and the P8Z77V- LK - both of which impressed me with their performance for a mainstream board and at a really affordable price. This doesn't stop Asus from making things even more affordable though. Whilst the more expensive -V model had a very rich set of features that covered all grounds for someone that was upgrading their motherboard, both on compatibility and future proofing, the slightly lower spec board does (as expected) drop a few features - including HDMI.
The drop of HDMI is something that one would expect on an entry level board, but with the number of user looking for budget options rising and also the number of monitors that support HDMI rising at all levels, its a wonder why its not a standard feature these days. Fear not though as Asus have thought exactly the same and so this leads us towards the new board that we are looking at today. The Z77-A is an ~£80 board that not only offers up HDMI support out of the box, it also offers gamers features that they would expect on higher level boards with support for two way CrossFireX and SLI.

The ASUS Sabretooth lineup always has been part of a little controversy. Some had no idea why the TUF series ever had to be made. Claiming high Durability and Reliability. So the other ASUS boards were inferior then in build quality ? Wouldn't they survive the torture test that the Sabretooth series do ? I've had the Sandybridge P67 version for internal testing and must say that it was a joy to work with. Even when benching with LN2, the board remained hassle free.
