When Intel launched their new range of Haswell processors at the start of June we reviewed a handful of new Z87 motherboards, including the high end Asus Sabertooth priced around the £200 mark. Not everyone can afford a £200 motherboard, so today we look at the budget Asus Z87-K motherboard priced around the £100 sweet spot. Can an inexpensive Z87 board really keep a discerning enthusiast user happy?
Motherboards
The first Haswell Intel Z87 retail motherboard we look at comes from ASUS in the form of the Z87-Expert.

The Z87-Deluxe/Quad is reserved for people who really want to use Thunderbolt in the future. If you belong to that group, there really isn't a reason not to buy this motherboard. Actually, if you're planning on building a new PC with Thunderbolt it wouldn't make sense to choose anything else but Thunderbolt 2.0, and right now this ASUS board is the only option on the market.

How many new features can you cram onto a motherboard that are both useful and innovative? ASUS is the expert at doing this, and their history of innovations is long: the custom EPU and TPU processors; intelligent fan control, the ability to update your BIOS on a board with no CPU and RAM installed, and so forth. The Z87-Deluxe/Dual LGA1150 motherboard shows that ASUS is not content to rest on its laurels. With new features like Near Field Communications and 802.11ac support, this motherboard has it all.
Motherboards
The ASUS Z87-Deluxe Motherboard offers many features you would expect to find on an enthusiast level motherboard. The Z87-Deluxe, built for the 4th Generation Intel Core Processors, comes with dual LAN (one being Intel), a Wifi/Bluetooth module, which is 802.11 ac as well as a software package and UEFI BIOS that many consider second to none. The ASUS Z87-Deluxe is LGA 1150 and is built upon the Intel Z87 chipset. It also has CPU Level Up options that can be either done manually by turning on the TPU switch right on the motherboard, via the BIOS, or in your OS using the new ASUS AI Suite III.

The ASUS Z87-DELUXE is a high-end socket LGA1150 motherboard targeted for the "Haswell" processors (fourth-generation Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors). Its main highlights include the presence of the next-generation Wi-Fi standard, the IEEE802.11ac, which supports a maximum theoretical transfer rate of up to 1 Gbps, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, Bluetooth 4.0 interface, and more.

Motherboards
You may remember with Asus, they had a range of motherboards branded as their core series which consisted of Pro, LX, LK, V, V-Pro, Deluxe and so forth. This has now had a complete overhaul with a new design and new naming system. There is a large selection within this range, but it is worth noting that these will be region specific, so that the consumer may not be able to get their board of choice, depending on their territory.
Within this range we find lots of different models with a slight rename, including Z87-C, Pro, Plus and even a mini-ITX offering known as the Z87i-Deluxe. The board we have with us today is the Z87-C which isn't quite the lowest-end board, but does sit towards that end of the scale.
The first most noticeable thing that you will find is that the colour scheme has completely changed from the black/blue combo to a brown/gold/yellow trio, which being honest I'm a bit weary of. I was never a massive fan when ECS had their golden boards, and Asus seems to have taken a leaf out of their book, though they have made it a bit more subtle which is nice to see, but I can honestly say that I think these boards will have to differ regionally as I don't think the gold colour scheme will be welcomed everywhere, especially in Western cultures.
So before we get straight into the performance side of things, we have a few other things to do first, which includes looking at the box and included accessories. After we've done that, we can take a detailed look around the board and what it has to offer in terms of design and features, especially with the new Z87 chipset at the heart of it. Once we've got this out of the way, we can start looking at stock performance as well as overclockability and how far our Haswell i7 4770k can be pushed on this budget/mainstream board.

The ASUS Z87-A is a mid-range socket LGA1150 motherboard targeted for the "Haswell" processors (fourth-generation Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors), debuting at a very affordable price. Let's see what this motherboard has to offer.
