With Intel being the sole supplier of chipsets for their processors, all motherboards with the same CPU and supporting chipset will provide pretty much the same performance at stock settings. Vendors strive to distinguish their products with additional features, which can be as disparate as a clever new BIOS or entirely new hardware capabilities grafted on via custom or third-party silicon. From a performance perspective, ASUS has historically added value with enhancements to standard interfaces, such as their accelerated USB 3.0, and hardware and software features that make overclocking easier, even for the novice. With the Z97-DELUXE they’ve even added entirely new high speed interfaces: M.2 and SATA Express. If you’re looking for a future-proof board for your next rig, this could be it.

Gigabyte has three very distinct motherboard lines in their X99 lineup and offer quite a lot of motherboards compared to most brands. They have their G1 Gaming Series, Overclocking Series, and Ultra Durable series. While the specific motherboards in each category are targeted at a certain type of user, many of their features cross into each category. Gigabyte were busy with media interviews at CES 2012 when Marketing Manager Colin Brix stormed in with a nice selection of Z77 boards to grace us with.

When I tested the GIGABYTE E350N-USB3 in February I was really impressed with what GIGABYTE and AMD were able to do with the E-350 based Fusion platform. One thing really bugged me about the board, though. The fact that it used active cooling was quite a disappointment, because it just felt like it didn't need it.
We have nothing against expensive motherboards, to the contrary, but we don't like paying for things we're not going to use. The MSI Z87 XPower is clearly aimed at extreme overclockers using extreme forms of cooling such as liquid nitrogen. So why should they be forced to pay for features they likely won't use for overclocking, such as 10 SATA600 ports, 10x USB 3.0, a KillerNic card, WLAN, Creative audio drivers and so on. None of these have any influence on 3DMark overclocking scores, but they definitely have an influence on the price.
