With AMD releasing the new FM2 platform, we start things off by looking at the MSI FM2-A85XA-G65.

If you are in the market for a new system based on the Z77 platform then today’s review product will be of interest. The Gigabyte Z77X-UP7 motherboard is a flagship product set to target the wealthy high end enthusiast audience who want to accept no compromises. Is this the ultimate Z77 motherboard?

With the release of FM2, we also saw a slight refresh with their chipset lineup as well as some additions. A85X was added but an old favourite was kept on with their A55 chipset, which we all remember from the FM1 Llano days.
A55 in a nutshell is your typical no frills option that gives you all the features you need, and none of the features that you don't need. I guess you could say that it's aimed at a particular market, such as HTPC, business, education, government and so forth as it doesn't have the likes of SATA III and Bluetooth and AMD CrossFireX technology, but for users wanting it for the purposes listed, are you really going to want all of that? If your answer is no, then why should you pay for it?

No one would have believed you if you had claimed a few years back that ASRock would release a £320 motherboard. Ever since the former ASUS budget-brand claimed its independence, every year the manufacturer keeps raising the bar with its deluxe high-end boards. It was that time again recently, when it launched the Socket 1155 motherboard Z77 Extreme11. This Ivy Bridge motherboard comes complete with workstation-like features.

Haswell and the Z87 chipset may be on the horizon, but the drive to have motherboards at all price points in the market for Z77 is as fierce as ever. A large number of users are seeking the budget options, both on the grounds of backwards compatibility and also their rich set of features for their competitively low price point. Not too long ago I took a look at two of Asus' entry level boards - the P8Z77-V and the P8Z77V- LK - both of which impressed me with their performance for a mainstream board and at a really affordable price. This doesn't stop Asus from making things even more affordable though. Whilst the more expensive -V model had a very rich set of features that covered all grounds for someone that was upgrading their motherboard, both on compatibility and future proofing, the slightly lower spec board does (as expected) drop a few features - including HDMI.
The drop of HDMI is something that one would expect on an entry level board, but with the number of user looking for budget options rising and also the number of monitors that support HDMI rising at all levels, its a wonder why its not a standard feature these days. Fear not though as Asus have thought exactly the same and so this leads us towards the new board that we are looking at today. The Z77-A is an ~£80 board that not only offers up HDMI support out of the box, it also offers gamers features that they would expect on higher level boards with support for two way CrossFireX and SLI.
