At the end of last month during Computex we saw the AMD 990FX chipset launch which brought with it some strong features. One of the more appealing ones was that it supports the new Bulldozer CPUs that are due out later this year. Because AMD aren't changing the socket, though, for the first generation of Bulldozer we can have boards now that support it while also supporting the current crop of CPUs from AMD.

Back at CES (during the G1-Killer launch) we were shown something pretty special; besides the G1 we mean. While Tim Handley was telling us about the virtues of the G1-Killer line-up, he flashed us a picture of a new board that was still under development. This was an early image of the X58A-OC. The concept was a streamlined product intended just for overclocking and performance.

Today we will be taking a look at three different approaches to socket 1155 products as we review a board based on H67 (mini-ITX) and to larger models which use the P67 and Z68. Each will be put through a selection of synthetic and real world tests to establish how they perform in a variety of scenarios which will assist anyone thinking about buying a socket 1155 product in the near future.

Towards the end of this month we'll see AMD launch its new Llano desktop platform which is part of the Fusion family that AMD are really concentrating on these days. Earlier this year we saw AMD launch the Brazos platform in the form of the E series APU. If you haven't already, it's worth looking at our GIGABYTE E350N-USB3 Review which covers what exactly the Fusion platform is along with how the APU we're hearing about now differs to the CPU that we've known for years. Fusion is what AMD will no doubt be seeing as the next big thing when it comes to desktop and notebook computing.

With the original problems of the Intel P67 platform now well and truly fixed, a Sandy Bridge set-up is once again a great recommendation for any computer enthusiast looking for a new CPU or motherboard. We all know how blisteringly fast, stupendously overclockable and extremely good value the Intel LGA1155 processors are, especially the ‘Core i5 2500K’ and ‘Core i7 2600K’. The ‘K’ series of processors feature the unlocked multiplier meaning they are built for overclocking. Anybody looking forward to enjoying the wonders of these new processors also needs a motherboard to suit their needs and not break the bank. P67 or Z68 boards are exactly where the enthusiast crowd are looking.

So far, MSI has released only two motherboards based on the new AMD 990FX chipset, one for the top mainstream market (990FXA-GD65), and one for the high-end market (990FXA-GD80). Let's take a look at the MSI 990FXA-GD80.
