ASUS' P7P55D-Deluxe motherboard is a socket 1156 Core i5 platform representing the flagship feature set. Along with the obvious support of Intel Lynnfield socket 1156 processors, the ASUS P7P55D-Deluxe motherboard features three PCI Express 2.0 x16 videocard slots for multi-graphic card set ups. Further expansion comes via a pair of PCI Express x1 and PCI slots. The P7P55D-Deluxe supports ATI Quad-GPU CrossfireX and nVidia Quad-GPU SLI, though you'd be hard pressed to find many users clamoring for a Geforce right now. There are four dual channel DDR3-1333/1066 memory slots which can accommodate up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM. Memory can be overclocked to run at DDR3-2133/1600 speeds with compatible modules.

Out of all the different types of hardware that I look at, motherboards - along with graphics cards - tend to be one of those that I look at most often from a wide range of manufacturers. And whilst this is all well and good for the high end enthusiasts and power users out there, for those people that are on a mainstream platform and are not really after all the high end styling and features that go with a top end board , there are not that many boards that I have looked at in the grand scheme of things.

Let's take a look at one of the first socket 1155 motherboards that will reach the market, the ASUS P8P67 Deluxe, based on the forthcoming P67 chipset for future Intel processors based on the "Sandy Bridge" architecture. The highlights of this motherboard include three PCI Express x16 slots, four USB 3.0 ports, four SATA-600 ports, BlueTooth 2.1 + EDR interface, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, and a high-end voltage regulator circuit.

The MSI Z87-G41 motherboard is inexpensive but doesn't skimp on quality. The Z87-G41 PC Mate Motherboard may only be a piece of the puzzle when building a custom inexpensive desktop but it comes with features that are found on MSI's gamer and enthusiast class motherboards. The MSI Z87-G41 comes with Click (UEFI) BIOS, 3 onboard display outputs for multiple monitors, PCI Express Gen 3 (Crossfire Capable), OC Genie 4, and has 4K UHD support. Something you would not expect on a budget board is Military Class components. The MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate comes standard with MSI's Military Class 4 components which include Dark chokes and solid caps for added stability. With Military Class 4 comes the benefits of Humidity. ESD, EMI and High Temperature protection. Finally with Super RAID software you can set up you own array in a Windows environment.

When in the market for a motherboard, most users who have decided on Intel for their processor are left with a big choice, do they go X79 or Z77? Well it comes down really to your main use of the system and more so your budget. Z77 is typically the chip set of choice when it comes to day-to-day computing and gaming, but if you're more like us at eTeknix where gaming is not a thing that you get time for or you generally don't want to do, where the focus is more on sheer power for the likes of video rendering and image editing, then with out a doubt X79 is the way to go.

Intel H57 is a more "complete" version of the Intel H55 chipset, supporting RAID, 14 USB 2.0 ports (against 12 on H55), and eight PCI Express 2.0 x1 lanes (against six on H55). H57H-MUS from ECS comes with two PCI Express x1 expansion cards to add USB 3.0 ports and SATA-600 (a.k.a. SATA 6G) ports on the motherboard. Let's what you should expect from this product.

Gigabyte's GA-A75M-UD2H is an entry level motherboard with onboard graphics, excellent connectivity and a rather appealing low total system price tag. This microATX motherboard is of course built around the AMD A75 chipset and supports socket FM1 AMD Fusion processors which offer integrated DX11 graphics.

The ASRock P67 Pro3 is one of the most inexpensive socket 1155 motherboards based on the P67 chipset available on the market today. Let's see if it is a good option if you are building a PC based on the new "Sandy Bridge" processors and are trying to save money.

The BIOSTAR NM70I-1037U board features an improved CPU, Ivy Bridge Celeron 1037, which is powerful enough to perform many tasks. In order to boost the 3D capabilities even further, we can install a dedicated video card into the available PCI-Express x16 port so we would be even able to game with low to mainstream graphics levels.
