The rollout of the 890FX chipset completes AMD's gaming platform of 2010. As stated above, the new chipset is quite solid and worthy of enthusiasts' attention. Speaking of Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD7, it has expectedly rich functionality. One distinctive feature is the original chipset cooling solution.

Following my recent look at one of Asus' mainstream boards, the P8Z77-V which saw me highly impressed with its feature pack and relatively competitive levels of performance that give some of the higher end board a run for their money, its time to see what else is available in Asus' mainstream motherboard line-up.

In April we published a round-up of 20 motherboards with Z77 chipsets compatible with the new Intel Ivy Bridge processors. Those CPUs weren't available yet at the time so we had to do the tests with the previous generation Sandy Bridge processors. Almost three months have passed in the meantime, and we now have 32 Z77 motherboards in our test lab along with Ivy Bridge processors. We tested every motherboard all over again, with an up-to-date BIOS and with an Core i7 3770K Ivy Bridge processor.

As regular readers of KitGuru will already know, Intel will be releasing their new processors and chipsets shortly. We have already covered several upcoming motherboards from Asus, but they sent us a P8P67 for a sneak peak and photo gallery for our readers. This product is based around the P67 Express Chipset. We can’t yet give you any insights into performance as we are under strict NDA but we took a nice series of shots with a high end SLR camera.

With the company’s solid set of options in the Z77 motherboard market, Asus is aiming to conquer the intermediate segment that lies between the entry-level and mid-range price categories. Enter the P8Z77-V LK motherboard.

The ASUS Sabertooth/TUF series of motherboards is well known throughout the computer hardware industry as being one of the most rugged motherboard designs available. ASUS put the Z87 Sabertooth that we have here today through hell and back before the motherboard is delivered to end users. Of course the motherboard has to survive this endurance test before it makes it to consumers and the fact we’ve received this one here today with its certificate of reliability tells us it has passed the strict testing procedures. The ASUS Sabertooth Z87 is a feature packed motherboard but it isn’t your average enthusiast class motherboard. Unlike most motherboards which are often targeted at budget users, gamers and overclockers the ASUS Sabertooth Z87 is aimed at at different niche – those concerned with stability, reliability and durability.
The biggest selling points and features about the ASUS Sabertooth Z87 are to do with stability, reliability and durability. They include ASUS’ newly designed TUF Thermal Armor, the TUF Thermal Radar, TUF Fortifier, Dust Defenender and TUF Engine Power Design using military-spec components. Of course it also has other ASUS mainstay features such as their UEFI BIOS, OC Tuner, USB 3.0 Boost, TurboV Core and so on. Being an Intel Z87 motherboard you’ve also got the full benefits of the Z87 chipset including native SATA III support, native USB 3.0 support and the LGA 1150 socket which includes Haswell CPU support and PCI Express Generation 3.0 support. The Z87 Sabertooth balances a combination of abundant features and high performance with the Sabertooth/TUF philosophy of stability reliability and durability.

If you're going down the path of building an absolute beast of a system between now and Christmas, the chances are you're going to be looking at the X79 chipset and the new LGA 2011 CPUs from Intel. At launch we've seen so many motherboards from companies that offer so many different features and hit us at so many different price points.
